This winter, we’re gearing up for something truly extraordinary: a drive through the rugged wilderness of Kel Suu, Kyrgyzstan, where temperatures plunge to -30°C and challenges await at every turn. As organisers, we’re not just packing bags—we’re preparing for the unknown. Our vehicles are being prepared to face the extreme cold, equipped with studded tires and reinforced suspensions. We’ll be carrying extra fuel, as stations are non-existent in the isolated terrains we’ll traverse. And since Google Maps doesn't work here, we’re meticulously mapping out every inch of our route the old-school way, relying on physical maps, GPS devices, and local knowledge. But all this preparation is more than logistics—it's about creating an unforgettable experience for the brave adventurers who join us. The raw beauty of Kel Suu, with its frozen lakes and towering mountains, will stir your soul. This is not your average expedition—it's a test of resilience, teamwork, and the spirit of exploration. There are two things I never want to rely on when leading remote expeditions: HOPE, or LUCK. Just imagine: ‘With some LUCK, we will make it to the summit safely.’ ‘I HOPE we will make it back without any serious injuries.’ No. That is not the way. Luck and hope, while useful motivators sometimes, are not going to cut it when we are striving towards our boldest goals. To succeed, we need a plan. The unseen side of my 64-day Death Valley to Denali expedition were the months of painstaking planning which went into considering every minute detail of the journey. Every time we get back from the Arctic Expedition we say that it was one of our best yet, but this really was; these students really pushed themselves this season in the -27 degrees nights out in the snow. One of our prize winners stayed out for 5 nights in total and nearly every single student stayed out for 3-4. They really made the most out of their experience. A number of things made this trip different. A new questionnaire for the students to answer before they go to help create their personal tasks. A more detailed and illustrated quinsy build lesson plan was created that made it easier to follow and adhere to the safety instructions. I think with the extra clarity for all, the objective was very clear and the construction results were better. One of the biggest changes for me was the new Young Leaders Program that we have developed and executed for the first time. It was a resounding success from both the Polaris and the student point of view. The young leaders learned how to communicate as a teacher, how to manage people with respect and how to develop listening skills and implement learning strategies amongst their peers. One of the more special moments was a night hike out to a wilderness shelter where the students built a fire; we all had hot chocolate and snacks and shared stories of our adventures around the globe before we settled down for the night in the wilderness. Its great to see the students inner strength and confidence soar as they get good at difficult things. It really sets them apart from “the average”. It’s a great feeling sending them home knowing that they are better, stronger and a little more able to face life’s challenges. 🚶♂️🏃♀️🚴♀️ Throughout May, we participated in an exciting challenge to coincide with National Walking Month. 🌍☁️ Our 'Move 4 Earth' virtual challenge aimed for us to walk, run, cycle, or move a collective total of 6,595 miles or 16,487,500 steps, to travel through a selection of European countries known for having some of the best air quality in Europe. 🌍👟We partnered with EarthRuns | Active For Earth, to plant up to 750 trees to celebrate the milestones our staff achieved during this challenge. Not only contributing to our team's physical and mental health but also enhancing air quality and fostering environmental sustainability by planting real trees in areas that need increased biodiversity. 👏 As May came to an end, we were delighted with everyone's enthusiasm and involvement. The goal was to set a difficult yet achievable target that would encourage us all to move more while contributing positively by planting trees. 🤔 However, our marketing lead Lucy Vizor may have been a bit ambitious with the set goal... 💪 Despite the incredible participation and effort from the team, we did not reach our initial target. However, our ‘Halfway Heroes’ made it all the way to Hungary, covering over halfway through this ambitious challenge with a collective distance of 3,077.84 miles or 5,288,306 steps. The true success of this challenge lies in the enthusiasm, commitment, and teamwork we've all shown. Plus, we discovered some fantastic new walking routes during what has been a very busy May for us all! 🥳 To end on a high note we did however do some clever rerouting and took a detour, which brought us to Tbilisi, Georgia, which is the furthest city involved in our Net 4 Cities project. So, we ended on a high note! 🌍🌱Thank you to the whole team who got involved.
