National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA’s Post

Don't speed. For any reason. Ever.

  • An informative image featuring a winding road with greenery on both sides and utility poles running along it. At the top of the image, text in yellow states "In 2022, 87%" and below in white it continues "of all speeding-related deaths happened on non-interstate roadways." At the bottom, there is an encouragement in yellow, "SLOW DOWN and ENJOY THE RIDE." The overall message is to promote safe driving behaviors on non-interstate roads.

That is realistic percent. Most existing rural highways were built from design standards from 1930 to 1945. Most consist of unneeded horizontal and vertical curves, which are potential safety hazards for the traveling public. Also, shoulder width is limited. Design standards for two lane roadways have changed drastically since the early years. Getting the standards implemented has been limited or nonexistent.
