To school leaders … The use of structure in teaching is often viewed as ‘basic’, the sort of thing you learn about in university and in your first year of teaching. However, I would argue that 80% of the reasons for lessons failing (or not being as effective as they could be) is due to poor lesson structure. And this is regardless of experience! The thing about lesson structure is that it is VERY easy to rectify. In fact, one could argue that in terms of bang for buck, the EASIEST way to improve teaching is to improve lesson structure. Frankly unhelpful diversions from the real issues Student Engagement is the prime factor in great teaching and there is no one size fits all way of doing this. Great Teacher Education with prospective teachers spending time within in schools in prog planned and operated by qualified teachers in teacher Ed where they can see without own eyes how schools and teachers engage students in productive learning . Sadly Teacher Ed has retreated to the Universities teaching about Teaching and the research on it forgetting about how to implement the great research they produce and how to teach by engaging learners . Numbers entering Teacher Ed have plummeted as prospective teachers search out school based programmes of more relevance The profession and its intakes and outputs are in crisis mode now and the current attempts to force students into learning will fail even further This is not however just an Aotearoa NZ issue- In the crazy USA around 50% are not regularly attending school either. If Education was an investors business, investors would have abandoned it long ago as rats do a sinking ship
