Business Insider reporter Alex Nicoll interviewed 2 Blackstone executives about its summer internship program. They declined to say how many of their interns are undergrads versus graduate students; they declined to say how many tend to get full-time offers at the end of the internship; they even declined to give us an exact number of interns hired for the summer of 2024, only saying it's more than 150. Top 10 mistakes interns make....that can cost them an offer 1. Cherry picking work you are staffed on 2. Missing deadlines to get decks to your MDs on time 3. Being defensive when receiving constructive feedback 4. Spinning your wheels on work and not asking questions 5. Assuming you know more than a full time Analyst constantly 6. Not checking in with teams after social events (night or weekend) 7. Putting more attention on networking than doing the work assigned 8. Not communicating capacity correctly & over promising work products 9. Working against the team especially in high stakes/short deadlines 10. Last week the Financial Times published my thoughts on the pressures young financial professionals face at work and the culture of long hours in the industry. As someone with experience in both asset management and education, I’ve seen that critical skills like leadership, decision-making, and resilience can be developed in alternative environments and non-traditional career paths. This summer, I returned to lifeguarding on the Jersey Shore and witnessed firsthand how unplugging and engaging with real-world challenges can shape young people in ways that office-bound internships often can’t. If your student didn’t land a Wall Street internship, don’t worry—there are many ways to build experience and prepare for tomorrow’s challenges. My journey started in Wildwood Crest NJ as an ocean lifeguard then as a history major at the University of Vermont, ending with one summer as an accounts payable intern with a semiconductor company. Eight years before joining Goldman Sachs, I built my financial experience and acumen at two wonderful financial services firm, neither traditional. Like the majority of employees at Goldman, I began as an experienced hire, and found my way to Wall Street after cutting my teeth in Midtown and Main Street. Arriving eight years after graduating college gave me something I didn't have when I left Burlington, perspective. It wasn't much, but it was enough to understand what I wanted in an employer. Although Goldman was a good company, it wasn't for me. So when my former colleagues called and asked if I would be interested in continuing to grow that boutique I started with in 2003 into something bigger, I understood that was the career I wanted. As a friend wrote before me, I realized I wanted to build the ladder rather than climb it. It's not about choosing between Wall Street and the beach; it's about finding experiences that build resilience and character, wherever they may be. You can find the article at the link below. That stereotypical image of working on Wall Street? I lived it. ⭐️ Cecily McCormack ‘24 🏠 Rutland, VT 📓 Business Administration: Finance 💼 Sales and Trading Fixed Income Intern at Cantor Fitzgerald Most people probably wouldn't opt to spend their winter break working away from home. But when the opportunity to spend the month in NYC at one of the top financial firms in the world popped up, I said yes. Absolutely, yes. And I've already learned SO much here. All these things I knew from UNH, I now get to apply to the real world. My internship was really hands-on. Essentially, I learned how salesman and traders go about selling and trading bonds. It's the perfect combination of both personable and analytical skills. Matching clients with the right assets is like a puzzle – and I love putting all the pieces together. I'm so thankful Paul's internship opportunity fund awarded me $2,500 to take this opportunity. Between NYC rent, commuting, and food, I didn't have to dip into my savings to be here. Which is just amazing. Nobody in my family has connections to the finance world, so I got this opportunity through sheer determination. I've been messaging alums and finance professionals on LinkedIn for years - probably hundreds of people at this point! Most people don't respond, but a managing director at Cantor Fitzgerald did. He gave me book recommendations and SO much advice. And then, in the fall he invited me to NYC for some informal networking/interviewing. (I got to chat/interview with the COO!) That led to this. I've had so much support on this journey from my professors. They're always willing to go the extra mile to help. Russ Miles even showed me how the subway system worked! I still check in with him weekly. Winter internships offer so much more one-on-one attention and real work. If you get the opportunity, just do it. I've fallen in love with this work and this city. You'll definitely find me in NYC after graduation. #PaulPride
