Each food items in a typical U.S. meal has traveled an average of 1,500 miles....If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce we would reduce our country's oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil every week. Do you know where your food comes from? The farmers in our community provide the crops, fruits, and vegetables that make up our produce section. Farms and ranches small and large are the backbones of our economy. And they need your support! Depending on how we spend them, our food dollars can either go to support a food industry devoted to quantity and convenience and “value” or they can nourish a food chain organized around values—values like quality and health. Yes, shopping this way takes more money and effort, but as soon you begin to treat that expenditure not just as shopping but also as a kind of vote—a vote for health & our countries well being in the largest sense. #SupportLocalFarmers #profoundfarms #texasfarmers #sustainablefarming #DFWcommunity #eatlocal

As those of us who've been working in #sustainablefoodsystems for over 15 years know only too well, it's been a challenge to get substantial media coverage of the complex set of issues that affect our #foodsecurity - local, national and global. With the pandemic, the Ukraine-Russia war and the #costoflivingcrisis, this is starting to change. Politicians are now taking these issues seriously (see the 2022 NSW Env & Planning Committee Inquiry into Food Production and Supply, the 2023 Federal House Standing Committee on Agriculture's national food security inquiry and Australian Food Story report, the two Victorian parliamentary inquiries on food security this year, and the Senate and ACCC inquiries into #supermarket prices) - and the media are also paying attention. The Northern Rivers #UrbanAgriculture and Food Futures Roundtable last November was one of four events that Sustain: The Australian Food Network co-hosted with 10 local and national partners including Northern NSW Local Health District UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures Community Gardens Australia The Mini Farm Project Baroona Farm Northey Street City Farm Young Farmers Connect and more. It's great to have this national coverage via Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Landline to focus attention on key issues impacting our food security including the competition between housing and farmland and pathways for new and young people to enter agriculture.
