This is disappointing, and everyone seems to agree it’s a bad idea. Nature-friendly farming is proven to work and have a positive impact for England’s imperilled wildlife. It’s also good for the economy. We need to see more support from government for farmers and landowners, not less. “A £100m reduction in funding would see 239,000 hectares less nature-friendly farmland, and a failure to invest in nature and climate is predicted to shrink the economy by 12% – an impact greater than Covid and the financial crash. As the latest independent research has found, we need to increase the agriculture budget in England, from £2.4bn to £3.1bn a year, if we are to ensure the future of our vanishing farmland birds and wildlife, clean rivers and thriving farming and rural businesses.” “Funding for nature’s recovery is absolutely critical to securing a prosperous and resilient future – to ensure that soils aren’t washed away, to secure a future for pollinators, and to help farms adapt to periods of heavy rainfall and drought. This weekend I met one of the UK's pioneers in regenerative farming #regen I toured his #farm (Moor Farm) in Gloucester, learned about the #crops he plants to enrich his #soil, the #agroforestry practices he adopts to help the productivity and #resilience of his outputs and the huge cost savings he has made from doing this. And thanks to these practices we also saw a rare barn owl which has taken up residence on his farm recently thanks to these practices. I was fascinated by his story and his learnings so I took the opportunity to interview him. My take-aways: 🌱 Regenerative farming can bring huge #costsavings and increased #productivity to farmers (and the outcome for the environment is so clear - we saw rare British orchids, the barn owl, thriving flora and healthy livestock) 🗓️ However it requires a #longtermoutlook and financial resilience in that period. This farm is humming after a DECADE of these practices 💰 For farmers who rely on their farms for survival, #financialsupport is likely required to maintain these practices in the first years. I saw a huge field of barley that netted £100 in profits - which they could afford to do because it was one of many fields they had and this was part of a long term approach for that field. I camped on his farm (another stream of income for him) 💳 He has decided not to sell #carboncredits for the time being. He doesn't want to 'enable people to feel good about their transatlantic travel'. But, he can afford to say this because he doesn't need the money to transform 🏦 Government #subsidies help but for a certain practice it would make financial sense for him to dig up and destroy his whole field and start again in order to get those subsidies. Farmers already doing the right thing are penalised and wrongly incentivised I think it's important to share all sides of this complex equation. Visiting a small farm in Northern Italy today after quite a mountainous drive and once again can't help but question the UK's grand idea of: - Actively selling productive farmland to diamond hand high bidders - hedgefunds - Providing a range of greenwash income options for investment land - Continue quietly making food production farming harder especially for the older generation to keep up with ever tightening rules and regulations. Our overall farming business (4 homesteads of 3 dairy, 1 beef) has had, I think, 14 official routine inspections since January this year not including any TB testing. Different departments, different holding numbers etc, plenty of duplication, but it has meant 14 days spent by the same 2 admin people preparing then showing inspectors around paperwork and facilities with nothing to show for it but the right to continue running a farming business producing food for the 98.5%. Not a problem for us fortunately but it would be VERY tiring for an individual with no admin department. Not a conspiracy theorist but all the people selling you the concept that you as a farmer (1.5% of the population) should feel guilty for traditional food production systems because the rest of the world is a desert, might have ulterior motives. Surely anyone who says you could start solving the global problem of carrying 8bn conusumerist people by planting trees across your 200ac farm in Wales or better still sell it to a hedge fund who can produce biodiversity tokens for an airline and send your children to work in a service industry so they don't build farm skills are a direct threat to your hardworking ancestor's legacy and your countries food security!!! I said the same thing after visiting British Columbia, Croatia, Peru, Argentina, Chile, France, Germany, Sweden, Norway and even closer to home Scotland on various trips over the past few years. There's an awful lot of wilderness and tree covered areas in the world compared to the lush green jewel of West Wales and I've only seen a corner of it. Anyway, I was delighted to hear news from home of a small milk price increase from 1st September. This was very welcome and will go a long way to help secure many UK farming businesses, a small increase per litre makes a very big difference at farm level, definitely helps making those 14 inspections worth the hassle.
