Homelessness impacts each corner of our city, from those living in crisis to our service providers, residents, and business owners. We know that real change happens through collaboration, compassion, and focusing on long-term solutions. That’s why we embrace a housing-first approach—housing is healthcare and the foundation a life is built on. Our goal is to address homelessness at every level— by updating codes that support housing development, building new affordable units, and simplifying land-use policies to create safe, livable communities. Through strategic partnerships, like Heading Home of South Central Indiana, and with data-driven solutions through the Built For Zero initiative, we are making real-time strides in identifying and responding to those in need. Habitat Australia’s Brush with Kindness program supports disadvantaged and vulnerable members of our community through mobilising volunteers to refurbish, repair and refresh crises and transitional accommodation for people facing hardship, including those recovering from trauma, escaping domestic violence situations or at risk of homelessness. One of our long-standing and impactful partnerships has been with Rainbow Lodge, a residential support program dedicated to helping men transition back into the community after a period of incarceration. We recently spoke to Claude, the manager at Rainbow Lodge about our partnership, Rainbow Lodge and the impact of Brush with Kindness. From 2022 to 2023, we've seen an 11% increase in unsheltered homelessness. These aren't mere statistics; they represent real people in need of our compassion and help.
