Space plant experiment, PH-03 with University of Florida is on its way back to Earth! PH-03 will shed light on whether spaceflight-induced genetic changes can be inherited from one plant generation to the next.  This could allow researchers to develop new strategies for adapting crops for growth in marginal and reclaimed habitats on Earth and help predict the long-term effect of spaceflight on multiple generations of plants that will be necessary for deep space travel. From moon landings and the Mars rovers to the recent successful deployment of the James Webb Telescope, space exploration continues to push the limits of what is possible in both science and technology and to pave new ways for the discovery of our galaxy. While we have seen great advancements and barriers broken, we remain limited in our ability to optimize science discovery without onboard intelligent capabilities to enable complex system missions. In this paper, we focus on AI technologies and cross-disciplinary directions for sparking research and development for space applications. NASA InSight Study Finds Mars is Spinning Faster. Scientists have made the most precise measurements ever of Mars’s rotation, for the first time detecting how the planet wobbles due to the “sloshing” of its molten metal core. The findings, detailed in a recent Nature paper, rely on data from NASA’s InSight Mars lander, which operated for four years before running out of power during its extended mission in December 2022. To track the planet’s spin rate, the study’s authors relied on one of InSight’s instruments: a radio transponder and antennas collectively called the Rotation and Interior Structure Experiment, or RISE. They found the planet’s rotation is accelerating by about 4 milliarcseconds per year—corresponding to a shortening of the length of the Martian day by a fraction of a millisecond per year. Large-scale expandable structures may prove to be a staple of future space habitats. It’s great to see LIFE progress towards flight! Although they can pack more pressurized volume into a fairing than traditional metallic modules, expandables typically experience challenges with their interior structure and outfitting.
