With about one-fifth of the giant sequoia trees in California killed by intense wildfires over the last two years, land managers are planting seedlings in an attempt to the save this iconic tree. Typically, these gigantic trees have a life span of more than 2000 years and have evolved to live with numerous, low-intensity fires. But the most recent fires have burned more intensely than sequoias are accustomed to are due to the way humans have altered the forest and climate-change related heat and drought conditions. Wildfire year-end 2023   It was a very mild fire year in total. Mild conditions, wet seasons in the West with dry hot spots in the East and South. However, it does not feel that way as the drought-fueled sundowner fire in Lahaina's speed, devastation, and human impact left a lasting. impression. NM's very large and long-lasting blazes held our attention in the Southwest.   While the rains sow tomorrow’s forest and WUI zone growth; Forest management’s continued lack of preplanning, harvesting, and controlled burns may loom large in 2024. Don’t mistake nature’s pause for heavy rain seasons for successful management, these are not the same.
