Giving back to the community 🕓 How I woke up at 4am today to be in the vineyards and volunteer with #TerraUma to participate in 🌿 Harvesting French Colombard Grapes 🍇 ☀ It's August, during the day close to 40 degrees C, early morning 25 already. This is grape harvest season in Israel. I had the incredible opportunity to join the Terra Uma crew, handpicking French Colombard grapes. Terra Uma is a foundation created by Tomer Weinberg, CEO, who was looking for a way to address PTSD post combat experience. He found this through the process of wine making, and now there have been several rounds of 'graduates' from the program and with success. Each participant in the program plays an active role in wine making, learns about the grapes, the process, the fermentation and finished product. This is a healing journey and enables them to reintegrate into society. The participants produce wine and sell their unique bottles. The proceeds go to the foundation. I met Tomer and the team through skill-based volunteering in sharing marketing expertise, and today we finally met live with the volunteers and program participants. 🙏 The experience of harvesting grapes is more than just a task; it’s a celebration of tradition, teamwork, and the promise of a great vintage. 🍷 💡 What did I learn today that also applies to leadership & life skills? 1) Teamwork really makes the dream work. The work is lighter and more fun, you talk and exchange experience. We sure heard some interesting stories today whilst picking grapes (but that for another time). 2) There are times when you need to get your hands dirty. Yes, stand in the dirt with your team and feel what it's like. You cannot see everything from remote and know what people are feeling and seeing. It opens perspectives. 3) Think about purpose. Knowing how your contribution helps achieve the greater goal is very satisfying. Even when it may be hard and at times you think why am I doing this all? Think about the end goals and how small steps lead to progress. Founder & Director, Reground | 2024 Westpac Social Change Fellow | Co-founder of Circuiti - the Circular Economy Exchange | Creating a socially just circular economy
Question: What does the Formula 1 Grand Prix have in common with the Northcote Local Food Garden - a communal permaculture patch in Melbourne's inner north? Answer: Not much, until this year. Back in March, the Reground team worked with Formula 1® Australian Grand Prix to collect all of the ground coffee from the event and deliver it to NLFG, located not far from Reground HQ in Darebin City Council. At the Food Garden, Kerrie and the other volunteers are now using the ground coffee to create perfectly calibrated compost and prepare the garden for autumn planting. When we say we're turning waste into a resource, this is what we mean. The ground coffee that event organisers would otherwise have paid high fees to send to #landfill is instead helping nourish soil and grow #community right here in Melbourne. It's simple, it's local and it works.
