Update on The Brokerage Summer Placement Programme (SPP) - The first round of Legal internships are currently at shortlisting stage, and we will be announcing who has been invited for an interview in the new year. Coming up in January and February for SPP we have Finance internships, HR, Underwriting, Risk, Advertising and also Television studio internships. You will have to check the criteria to see which roles are for your education stage, as they vary. i.e. Undergraduate, Post 16, Gap Year student, Graduate etc. St Luke’s Flying Start internships have launched and you can apply on their website or on The Brokerage hub! For those asking about our Year 13 university scholarships, we will start recruiting in spring and they will also come with SPP internships. For example, for the 2024 applicants, internships will commence in summer 2024 for Vanguard Asset Management, while the 2 consecutive internships for BMO will start 2025 and 2026. However, if you are in Year 13 and want to start working right away for a global investment management firm and get a degree at the same time, then look out for Newton Investment Management’s degree VTP. We will be launching in spring, and you can express your interest on the Brokerage hub! In terms of our partner placements, we have various graduate schemes, industrial placements, internships (short and long), apprenticeships, entry level roles, work experiences and law training contracts/ vacation schemes on the Brokerage Hub. Don't apply for these internships as a finance student... Before I tell you more about it, here's some context: A lot of companies sell Insurance plans with "guaranteed returns" While one of the most important principles of investing is "Never mix an insurance with FD/ investments." Clearly almost everyone after the pandemic is lured towards the stock market, and therefore these schemes couldn't found anyone to sell to. Enter: "Internship opportunities" They reach out to tier 2/3 colleges, hire thousands of interns a year and make them sell the schemes to... well whoever they can. The companies try to motivate interns promosing PPOs, Domestic and international tours and what not. Often the interns end up buying the schemes for themselves just to meet the targets. ps: I am myself a victim of such "internship opportunities" and don't want my juniors to end up selling crap (or worse buying it for themselves) so next time you're applying for an internship, read the JD very carefully! If it doesn't specify the role clearly and beats around the bush... it's crap.
