This is my first «feminist» post. Why now? Because I had an unpleasant encounter with one of our vendors last week.
And here’s the full story:
So far I had never felt a necessity for being more feminist. Since I joined Roche 17 years ago, I have seen a huge increase in female leaders and I have many inspiring women to look up to. One of them is Kristen A. Pressner, the head of People and Culture (aka Human Resources) at Roche Diagnostics. She coined the sentence “Flip it to check it.” so that we could check if our behavior was biased (have a look at her Ted Talk on unconscious bias here: https://lnkd.in/ebK3f98t) – 9 minutes well invested.
So what happened?
One of our vendors was not delivering; our project more than 3 months delayed and I found myself in the unpleasant situation of discussing next steps, including the potential end of our collaboration with them. It was a pretty factual discussion until an account manager who was new to the team started to elaborate on similar situations he had faced in his past life in a Pharma Company and that he could understand my feelings. This was the moment when I was wondering: Would he approach the situation the same way if I were a man? Where does he want to go with this and what is he trying to achieve?
We can all be biased, but we should remind ourselves regularly (daily?) to flip it to check it: replace the person you are interacting with, with another person. Replace in your thoughts a man with a woman (and vice-versa), a non-binary person with a man or woman, a person of color with a white person etc.
