When pregnant, the cells of the baby migrate into the mothers bloodstream and then circle back into the baby, it’s called fetal-maternal microchimerism. For 41 weeks, the cells circulate and merge backwards and forwards, and after the baby is born, many of these cells stay in the mother’s body, leaving a permanent imprint in the mothers tissues, bones, brain, and skin, and often stay there for decades. Every single child a mother has afterwards will leave a similar imprint on her body, too. Even if a pregnancy doesn't go to full term or if you have an abortion, these cells still migrate into your bloodstream. Research has shown that if a mother's heart is injured, fetal cells will rush to the site of the injury and change into different types of cells that specialize in mending the heart. The baby helps repair the mother, while the mother builds the baby. How cool is that? This is often why certain illnesses vanish while pregnant. It’s incredible how mothers bodies protect the baby at all costs, and the baby protects & rebuilds the mother back - so that the baby can develop safely and survive. Think about crazy cravings for a moment. What was the mother deficient in that the baby made them crave? Studies have also shown cells from a fetus in a mothers brain 18 years after she gave birth. 💔 Miscarriage affects 1 in 5 pregnancies. It's a heartbreaking reality that many women face. But what if there was a way to prevent more losses? 🌟 Exciting new research reveals that progesterone may hold the key for certain women. 🤔 The landmark PRISM trial recently studied the effects of progesterone for miscarriage prevention in threatened miscarriages. While the overall results did not show significant improvements for everyone, something remarkable was discovered. 🌈 Women with 3 or more prior losses had a 15% increase in live births when given progesterone for only 4 weeks in early pregnancy. This means that progesterone could be a safe and effective option for these high-risk women. 🙌 This discovery has already the guidance for miscarriage prevention in the United Kingdom. 💡 Did you know that incontinence is not inevitable as we age? It's true! While aging may increase the likelihood of incontinence, it does not make it a normal part of aging. In fact, young women, especially athletes, have bladder leakage too. One in four women between 18 and 59 have involuntary leakage. 🤫 It’s estimated that half of women experiencing leakage don’t tell their doctor about it due to shame, or thinking it is a normal part of the aging process. Predicting the likelihood for a pregnant woman to deliver preterm is essential to providing at-risk mothers with adequate monitoring and treatment. However, due to the large number and complexity of risk factors, it can be quite difficult for healthcare professionals to make an accurate prediction. 🎯👩⚕️ A cohort study of over 3,500 women revealed that machine learning models have great potential to support individual risk analysis for each pregnant woman. They are able to determine the individual risk for preterm birth and use this data to predict the most influential risk factors for future mothers. 👩👧👦 For women in their second or third pregnancy, the greatest risk factors are higher maternal age, previous preterm birth, previous caesarean section, preeclampsia and placenta previa. 🤰 For women in their first pregnancy, the greatest risk is BMI at delivery, maternal age, amniotic fluid infection, premature rupture of membranes and preeclampsia.
