This is a pivotal moment for the future of a patient-empowered health system. At last, blockchain and Web3 are being recognized at a national level as the solution to the existing shortcomings of Web2 systems, which lack patient involvement, engagement, control, and privacy. As we advance towards AI solutions and personalized medicine, the need for comprehensive data collection—from medical records and wearables to genomics and lifestyle information—becomes increasingly critical. Centralizing all this data in a single database controlled by a few dominant players is not viable. The sensitivity and value of this data, coupled with the high risk of misuse and exposure, demand a new approach. Enter LabTrace - powered by Algorand, utilizing Algorand’s blockchain to bring transparency and security to research data. This week, I attended and presented at the 3rd Kenya Land Commission Research Conference in Nairobi, which focused on the theme of "Data, Innovation, and Technology for Land Governance." The discussions delved into the practical application of cutting-edge technological advancements in the land sector. Topics ranged from the utilization of AI and augmented reality for efficient land use planning and monitoring to leveraging blockchain technology to establish a secure and transparent land registry solution. During my presentation, I had the privilege to share insights from a paper co-authored by Christopher Burke, Carolina Reynoso Pieters, and myself. Our paper emphasized the crucial role of government policy in driving the integration of technology in land governance. To illustrate this, we highlighted the case of Uganda and the pivotal impact of the Land Act of 1998 in democratizing customary land documentation. This policy shift facilitated community-led processes and provided the foundation for adopting fit-for-purpose technology and approaches. Notably, it laid the groundwork for organizations like ours, Cadasta Foundation, to empower communities through training in using simple geospatial tools, such as mobile devices connected to a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) device. A noteworthy example is the successful documentation and issuance of certificates for over 6000 parcels of land in Namutumba and Kaliiro Districts, facilitated by Trimble Inc.'s Catalyst technology. #LandGovernance #Technology #Innovation #Kenya #ResearchConference
