Yesterday, we released our first Issue Area Snapshot focused on environmental issues facing Miami-Dade County. This snapshot is the first in a series aiming to create collective awareness and a call-to-action around issues that matter to Greater Miami. Rising sea levels and water quality are among the most critical issues affecting our community. Since 1996, we have experienced six inches of sea level rise, which has resulted in a staggering 400% increase in flooding. In a promising development, Miami-Dade County’s ‘Back Bay’ Coastal Storm Risk Management (CSRM) Feasibility Study resumed its vital work in 2023 to help explore opportunities to protect our most vulnerable areas from future storm surge damage. The findings from this study could unlock significant federal funding, empowering local initiatives to tackle storm surges and safeguard our shores. Ready to take action? The Watershed Institute with 30 environmental organizations wrote to Governor Murphy on April 5th asking that long overdue rules be released immediately. This vital action will save lives and property by better preparing our state for increased flooding and intense storms due to climate change. Although the Murphy administration made progress with the Inland Flood Protection Rules in July 2023, coastal communities are still awaiting the larger set of updates under the NJPACT Resilient Environments and Landscapes (NJPACT REAL) rules. In the four years since Governor Murphy announced these rules that would protect New Jerseyans from climate threats, sea level rise, and beach erosion have continued to plague coastal communities and threaten critical wildlife habitats. Independent reports from Rhodium’s Energy & Climate team estimate that over $15 billion worth of homes and buildings are now likely to flood at least once a year. Meanwhile, the most recent National Climate Assessment reports that over 80% of properties in the Northeast lack adequate flood insurance coverage. The REAL Rules provide vital solutions needed to tackle these challenges. They will modernize how we build more resilient infrastructure that protects nature and people from the looming threats of climate change. The rules add increased protections for all communities statewide and encourage us to use the best science to inform our future plans. Check out the latest from the Public Policy Institute of California: Californians have been facing a record heat wave and wildfires across the state this summer. The state’s multibillion-dollar budget deficit prompted spending cuts for climate and energy programs. In response, the legislature approved a $10 billion state bond for the November ballot that asks voters to approve more funding for drought, floods, wildfires, coastal resilience, and extreme heat mitigation. The deep partisan divide on climate and energy policies surfaced in the presidential debate on June 27. With politics dominating the headlines, lest us forget about weather headlines! Today, heavy to excessive rainfall will persist through Thursday from southeast Texas into southern Louisiana, bringing the threat of flash, urban and small stream flooding. A Moderate Risk (level 3 of 4) of excessive rainfall is in effect through Thursday. Dangerous heat will continue across the Western U.S. and northern Plains through Thursday.
