This week, we had the honour of hosting an exceptional guest!
Cole Brauer visited our Burnaby HQ, where she toured the facility, spoke with our team about her incredible journey to become the first American woman to race solo non-stop around the world, and collaborated with our product team on future sailing gear.
As the youngest and only female contender in the Global Solo Challenge, she achieved an impressive second place after 130 days at sea. Standing at just 5'2" and weighing under 100 pounds, Cole has shown that with grit, determination, and perseverance, anything is possible. We're thrilled to support her with our technical gear. #livebeyondland
So honored to host Cole Brauer and Alvaro. She is lightning in a bottle and an amazing example of perseverance, tenacity, strength and grace.
Huge thanks to Theresa, Anja and the marketing team for making the connection and bringing Cole into our world and us into hers Mustang Survival #livebeyondland

🆘 Mansplaining vs Primesplaining
Below is an example of some dreadfully patronising behaviour directed towards a very talented golfer - so called 'mansplaining'. Embarrassing and ugh!!
The recipient handles it with commendable politeness and immense grace. 👏
However, I would like to point out that this type of patronising behaviour isn't limited to golf or women. It happens a lot in business too, especially if you're an SME owner, regardless of your sex.
In my experience, SME owners are very capable people. If they weren't, they wouldn't be SME owners, because it takes a lot to risk your own money to found and grow a business.
SMEs are excellent business training grounds; you have to learn all aspects of a business - finance, strategy, governance, operations, HR, marketing and commercial - quickly and to a high standard.
Yet, so many of my SME colleagues report being patronised (normally unintentionally) by colleagues in large multinational organisations.
While many in these large businesses are the very model of mutual respect (in the same way that not all men are 'mansplainers'), there are unfortunately a small minority who seem to view SMEs as a lower form of business life.
They tend to view those who work in SMEs as not being 'real business people', not business savvy, not commercially aware, and, frankly, not of the same calibre as those who have worked for many years in large multinationals.
They offer well intentioned, but often patronising, unsolicited advice - which is normally based on their own 'large-business' conception of the world.
Just ask any SME owner and they will confirm that this happens! We call this phenomena 'primesplaining'. It is of course ludicrous and is as wrong and embarrassing as 'mansplaining'
I have many incredible friends who work in large Prime Contractors and I would be the first to admit that there are huge numbers of wonderfully talented people who work in these corporations (which, by the way, I fully support as they are vital to our society).
I just hope that the very small fraction of them who seem to look down on SME owners will eventually start treating them as the experienced business people that they actually are.

Professional golfer and local woman Georgia went viral on TikTok this week after a man gave unsolicited advice on her golf swing. ⛳️
We think a lot of us agree that there is nothing worse than when people explain to us how to do our jobs even though we're more than capable. 🤦♀️
Despite the mansplaining, Georgia handled it super well regardless, what a woman!

🌐 In light of World Braille Day on January 4th, let's take a moment to truly recognize the profound importance of braille.
📚 Braille, a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols, is indispensable for education, freedom of expression, and social inclusion, as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
World Braille Day, celebrated since 2019, underscores the significance of Braille as a communication tool, ensuring the fulfillment of human rights for the blind and partially sighted.
🎵 As the legendary Stevie Wonder beautifully expressed:
"At the end of the day, we must come together and make wherever we are in the world be a place of unification. Because me being blind visually doesn't mean that I have to be blind spiritually. And someone being sighted doesn't mean that they should be blind to those things in the world that we need to fix. We have to have inclusion."
Explore more about World Braille Day on the UN's official website and don't miss Stevie Wonder's impactful video challenging assumptions about Braille: https://lnkd.in/d3U87fz
Let's spread awareness, break down barriers, and champion inclusion for all. 🌍💙

Ride Illinois board member, Cynthia Hoyle. FAICP, LCI, was recently interviewed by Illinois Public Media to discuss the need for safe, connected infrastructure for bicyclists, pedestrians, and other vulnerable road users.
Present-day infrastructure makes driving the only real option for too many Illinois residents. But people, especially younger generations, want options. As a result, forward-thinking leaders are working to make their communities safe for adults and children to bike and walk for everyday trips. Change is hard and will take time, but momentum is bulding!
Listen to the 16-minute interview at the link below. Well done, Cynthia!

This is simply unacceptable. The local planning departments and county and city governments must take notice. Only with proper traffic planning can these statistics change. Adding safe cycling lanes and areas only takes willpower of local governments to implement needed safety rules for road improvements. As our area continues to grow so will these terrible statistics unless change is implemented in local planning. With the thousands of miles of roadways in the areas it is not unreasonable to demand safe bike lanes for those who choose to exercise and avoid using cars and trucks.

“Our goal is to ensure people get to where they need to go, when they need to go –– and braille is essential for many people who are blind or have low vision," says Shoko Kitano, Executive Director, British Columbia/Yukon, CNIB. “As we continue to champion safe and accessible journeys for all, TransLink’s Access Transit Users’ Advisory Committee (UAC), Metro Vancouver’s municipalities and Access for Sight Impaired Consumers (ASIC), an independent, consumer-driven advocacy coalition, have been instrumental in making transportation more accessible for our community.”
