Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman and CEO of UMG said, “We first focused on a fairer way to allocate the streaming pie among real artists by addressing fraud and other aspects that deprive artists of their just compensation" His role is to redirect streaming funds back to his company to increase UMG revenue from their major artists. As someone who works with independent artists who are building their careers, this approach is only "artist centric" if you're signed to a major label. It's definitely not fairer to independent artists and the claim that they are not "real artists" is, frankly, insulting. "Just compensation" would be ALL artists being paid for every stream, without stream count thresholds or (as yet undefined) minimum listener counts. Yes, fraud is a problem. #FreeAgencyFiles - While everyone is in a frenzy over the recent A.I. wave of songs being released (I.E. #Drake vs #Kendrick), this bit of news is very important! SAG-AFTRA have now come to agreement with the major label groups to protect artists rights in regards to A.I. usage. The deal points specifically outline that artist must give consent for any A.I. generated content. Additionally, this new deal gives an increase in percentage of streaming revenue. Something that artists and songwriters have been extremely vocal about, which has been leading them into my world of #D2C #superfan platforms. It will be interesting to see how much this actually improves the current state of the business as it relates to artist being paid fairly. Most Artists Are Missing an Average of Around 10% of Their Lifetime Earnings, Mogul Finds The #musicindustry is complex, and even though streaming services make it easier for artists to be discovered, many still lose their rightful earnings due to unfair royalty rules, controversial incentives, and millions of manipulated tracks that impact the original artists' payouts. Mogul has found more than $3.5MM in previously unidentified revenue while tracking more than $30MM—before the service has even launched. Remember that post I shared about how tough it is in majors right now? Because the things they used to do no longer matter... It's playing out..... Atlantic Records are firing two dozen of their team... (who counts in dozens??) ...from the RADIO and MUSIC VIDEO departments. 😲 Aren't those two of the key things majors used to differentiate themselves? Wasn't that the core strength of companies like Atlantic? They will be replaced by: "Multi-talented, ambidextrous people – our ‘SWAT teams’ – who encircle the artist and do everything possible to help achieve their full potential." And with a new approach that is: "Bold, and bespoke to individual artists." What chance that the perfect, bespoke, multi-talented SWAT team for each artist is made up of a set group of employees inside a particular label? None. The approach is right.
