This is for the broader Canadian M&A market and it is incredible to see how closely it parallels to what we’re seeing in the RE market with a lot more interest in secondaries (and perhaps a tad bit more stress). Excerpt below… “The combination of high interest rates, tight credit markets and the competitive bidding process for premium assets leads us to expect an increased focus on value creation, as well as a tight talent market for value creation professionals. We also expect to see an increase in secondary deals as several factors converge to spotlight this investment class: pressure from limited partners (LPs) to return funds, difficulty in raising new capital and increased comfort with secondaries as a deal type.”
Getting deals done right in the current environment, especially with the higher cost of capital, continues to be critical. In an update to our South East M&A Barometer report, we have seen slightly more M&A transactions involving high growth companies compared to Q1 2023. We had hoped to see a greater uptick for the first quarter, but despite this not yet coming to fruition, optimism remains. Deal volume outside of North America and Europe in 2023 remained unchanged from 2022, while overall deal volume in the sector hit a three-year low.
