I'm speaking at next week's UKRI Sustainable Aviation Fuel conference on the key role that carbon removals can play in decarbonising aviation alongside SAF. Looking at the progress of CCS and carbon removals in the UK from energy from waste and BECCS plants, I will emphasise the importance of building demand for negative emissions from the aviation sector, to support new projects, drive down costs and reduce the dependency on Government. Aviation will need both SAF and carbon removals at scale to achieve Net Zero. Offsetting carbon removals will be available at scale in the UK as an affordable alternative to SAF by the end of this decade. Fascinating panel discussion on 🌿 Sustainable Aviation Fuels (#SAF) & the challenges for #aviation #decarbonisation, hosted by MEP José Ramón Bauzá. On the panel: EUROCONTROL's Head of Sustainability and Acting European Green Sky Director Marylin Bastin, Maria De Las Flores DIAZ PULIDO of the European Commission & Steven Fitzgerald of Ryanair. 👉 We're working closely with 100+ stakeholders to #RaiseTheBar for sustainable aviation with our #FlyingGreen platform of green services which is currently under development. For Marylin 💬 "the best emissions are the ones not emitted at all" - stressing that aviation relies on all the measures there are to reduce emissions: technological advancements, ATM improvements, SAF, but also global market-based measures. Some key takeaways from her intervention: 🌿 SAF is one of the most promising solutions to decarbonise aviation because it can already today be used in conventional aircraft (& besides CO2 emissions can also help address the challenge of non-CO2 emissions and air quality) 🌿 Producing sufficient amounts of e-SAF/synthetic SAF and other renewable energy requires green electricity - a challenge that aviation shares with other transport sectors. 📰 Very happy to share the outcomes of our latest Think Paper focused on the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (#SAF) for long-haul flights. Our #TeamEUROCONTROL sustainability expert Laurent TABERNIER took advantage of our new #FlyingGreen platform’s FuellingDecarb module to explore the feasibility of producing sufficient sustainable aviation fuel (#SAF) to meet the ReFuelEU blending mandate for long-haul flights and the volume of electricity necessary to generate the required #SAF. In this Think Paper, we estimate that producing the required SAF and co-products for long-haul flights would require an important upscaling of green/clean energy. At the same time, we also look at the potential for optimising the availability of SAF at airports and the role that fleet renewal could have in accelerating the decarbonisation of long-haul flights.
