To / for brands and marketers : 💡♈🔷 1998… My first job… Area Sales Manager at GE Lighting, Nagpur branch… Day 1 – I was paired with Amit Upadeo, a seasoned GE Sales Manager at the Nagpur branch, for on-the-job training… We were visiting a Kirana (Grocery) Counter in Waadi, a suburb near Nagpur… The conversation between Amit and the shop-owner : Amit : “Saaheb, I'm from GE Lighting. We have GE bulbs available at Rs.6.10 each. How many should I give you ? One box ? It’s on consignment basis. Pay after you sell the entire box of 100 bulbs.” Shop-owner : “Rs.6.10… Why is it 10-20 paise expensive than other branded bulbs from competing brands ? I won’t keep…hard to sell…” Amit : “It’s just 10-20 paise expensive buddy ! Keep ! Will get sold…” Shop-owner : “No !! No !! What makes this bulb costlier by 10-20 paise ??? A bulb is a bulb at the end of the day…!!!!!” Amit : “Arre bhau GE hai !!!” Shop-owner : “So what ???” 🤔 🙄 Amit takes the bulb out of the sleeve, taps the globe of the bulb hard on the table-top of the shop counter repeatedly, and says, "See ! It’s not breaking !! See !!!" Shop-owner : “Sahi hai Bhau !! Give me 2 boxes !!! I’ll sell them the same way… They’ll sell !!” The market & consumers expect that even a bulb needs to be distinctly different from competitors 🙂 !!! 💡♈🔷 Subsequent stints with brands like Toshiba, Philips, and LG bolstered the learning many folds. Some of the ‘demonstrable’ ‘distinct’ differentiators I encountered were : Toshiba – World’s first ‘glasses-free’ 3D LED TV Philips – DVD players that would play any format or scratched discs LG – World’s first ‘sound focused’ LCD / LED TVs (JAZZ), LCD/LED with ‘IPS panel’, Plasma TVs with ‘sturdy / almost unbreakable glass panels’ (Same as – “See ! It’s not breaking !! See !!! 😊 ) 💡♈🔷 Three take-aways for me : 1) What ‘demonstrable’ ‘distinct’ differentiation does your product(s) / solution(s) have ? 2) Even seemingly inconsequential features to the consumer can drive ‘differentiation’. (Inconsequential : Why would a consumer tap a bulb hard on a wooden tabletop or punch the Plasma TV panel with their fists?
