#futurefriday: promoting #diversity in Surgery "By acknowledging the challenges faced by students from diverse educational #backgrounds, we can promote a more inclusive and diverse #futuregeneration of academic surgeons" In this recent publications by Reagan Collins et al. in JAMA Surgery challenges faced by students from diverse institutional backgrounds in pursuing academic surgery were discussed. doi:10.1001/jamasurg.2024.1506 The authors formulated several recommendations to promote institutional diversity in general surgery residency, for students 👨🎓 and institutions 🏥 . Some of the examples: 🏥 --> Conduct a holistic review of all applicants. Consider not only academic achievements but also personal qualities, experiences, and potential for growth. 🏥 --> Standardize and increase transparency of the applicant review process.  👨🎓 --> Establish, grow, and maintain connections external to your institution to expand your network of support. 👨🎓 --> Seek out involvement in national surgical associations. #emergencymedicineday was dedicated to students at Philipps-Universität Marburg in preparation for their neuranatomy exam. Stab wounds in the spine and explanation of Brown-Sequard-Syndrome, peripheral vs. central vertigo and parapontine reticular formation (PPRF), internuclear ophtalmoplegia (INO) and brain stem anatomy, peripheral nerve blocks in injuries, facial blocks in wound management, aphasia syndromes in stroke or cerebral arteries and stroke (PICA, Wallenberg Syndrome), pain receptors and management, syringomyelia and lateral spinothalamic tract, and much more. So complex - so interesting - so important. Pleasure to explain why it is important what students have to learn for their patients.

We're excited to continue our #commitment to the development of young radiologists through the Bracco Fellowships. Offering 105 grants from 2023 to 2025, these #fellowships provide training at top academic centres and have a unique focus. Congratulations to Moravian DPT faculty member Krista Rompolski PhD on publication of her recent peer-reviewed manuscript: "Confessions of a converted anatomist: Teaching without anatomical donors." Through this commentary, Dr. Rompolski aimed to "present my history of anatomy education and how my perspectives on teaching and learning anatomy have changed dramatically throughout my teaching experiences. The purpose of this article is to support instructors who are creating anatomy courses for all healthcare trainees without donors, inspire those teaching with donors to incorporate other methods of instruction and evaluation, challenge educators to examine their own biases surrounding anatomy education, and provide recommendations for developing an anatomy course without human donors." Throughout the manuscript, Dr. Rompolski carefully and thoughtfully outlines and reflects upon arguments for and rebuttals to donor-based learning, including how her own perspective on such issues have changed throughout her teaching career. Dr. Rompolski also thoroughly outlines the multifaceted laboratory experiences that she uses in the Moravian DPT anatomy course, including use of the Anatomage Inc. virtual dissection table, osteology lab, palpation lab, and clinical correlation sessions. Dr. Rompolski concludes, "As educators, we need to be cautious and carefully consider if personal bias, conventional wisdom, tradition, or fear is our rationale against making changes to our courses or creating courses in a different format or with different resources than we expected to utilize. The gross anatomy laboratory is no exception. I believe that you can have an anatomy course without human donors that promotes an equal level of clinical reasoning, teamwork, and empathy among future healthcare practitioners." Meet Rachel Tyli, our next graduate studentship awardee, in the UofT Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology, co-supervised by James Scott, Tracy Kirkham and Allison McGeer. Read about Rachel's research work below. During the COVID-19 pandemic, respirators were essential in ensuring protection of emergency service workers (ESWs). For effective protection, respirators must be fit-tested on individuals. Fit testing is expensive (fit testers are >20K CAD) and time-consuming. ESWs need a new, cheaper, faster and more accurate measurement method for quantifying respirator fit. ESWs are a racially and gender-diverse demographic, very different from the historical group of respirator users (predominantly Caucasian males). Previous studies indicate that respirators fit women and non-Caucasian ethnicities poorly. To address these concerns, Rachel is developing a computational method using 3D scans of faces and respirators to measure respirator fit. In this model, two 3D-scanned facial and respirator meshes fit together. Fit is then determined by geometrically evaluating the perimeter around the respirator for gaps. 3D scans are being collected from 200 Ontario ESWs. Furthermore, a standard fit-test and a simulated work fit-test are performed. The simulated work fit-test evaluates leakages during tasks, like CPR, airway management and patient handling. The results from the fit test will be used to validate the computational method. The outcomes of this project are far-reaching; - the model has the potential to eliminate the use of an expensive and inaccessible fit tester, opening the possibility to replace standard fit testing with smartphone apps capable of 3D scanning. - By creating a model based on a diverse population, this study aims to find the shortcomings of respirator fit testing standards, especially for non-male identifying individuals and non-white ethnicities. Through the development of the novel methodology and validation, described above, Racehl's project aims to inform and improve respirator design and the standard for evaluating respirator fit for one of society’s most essential worker groups, especially in the event of another pandemic.

Safe Vascular Access Needle (SVAN) project has received FFG Spin-off Fellowship The FFG's Spin-off Fellowship program is intended to support the exploitation of intellectual property at universities and research institutions at a very early stage to enable the founding of a company after the fellowship has been completed. ACMIT’s long-term scientific partner, the Center for Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at the Medical University Vienna has been awarded the prestigious Spin-off Fellowship for the SVAN (Safe Vascular Access Needle) project by FFG, Austrian Research Promotion Agency. Dr. Gunpreet Oberoi (senior scientist at ACMIT and postdoctoral researcher in the Center for Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at the Medical University of Vienna) is leading this project together with a dedicated team of experts. SVAN was developed for neonatal and the veterinary use. Intraosseous access (IO) for the administration of life-saving medications in emergency situations is now increasingly being used in newborns. International guidelines for neonatal resuscitation also recommend IO access, in which a thin needle is inserted into the highly vascularized bone and drugs can be administered quickly, as an alternative when other venous access approaches are not possible. To enable safe IO access, the new SVAN system was developed with the unique feature of a self-stop mechanism of the drill. This significantly improves patient safety and trains the doctor's skills relieving them of the anxiety of destroying the small bones or injecting medication incorrectly. The first functional prototype, adapted to a realistic 3D printed tibial trainer for newborns, has been established as part of a preliminary project. With the follow-up project SVAN, the prototype of SVAN drill and JIO (Juvenile Intraosseus) training system will be further developed into a production-ready device.
