Did you Know??? -The world produces enough food to feed all of its 8 billion people, yet 733 million people (1 in 11) go hungry every day. -2.8 billion people around the world cannot afford a healthy diet — 35% of the global population. This year's theme of the #international world food day " Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better future " emphasized the need for better agri food systems and beyond the agri systems the involvement of all for a more sustainable future . The urgency for transformation is undeniable given the growing population, climate change and the depletion of resources. There is therefore the need for regenerative practices that promote #biodiversity, #conserve water and soil and #empower Local communities and farmers #Foodforall #sustainability #FAO #WFP #zerohunger

The Green Revolution confounded Malthusian predictions of widespread food scarcity, but revolutions are rarely black and white. Today the food system generates detrimental impacts on health, climate, and nature—creating negative externalities to the tune of USD 15tr every year (2020 USD), or 12% of global GDP. The agri-food industry is now entering a new phase—Green Revolution 2.0. This report analyzes the solutions that characterize it, and the role of capital providers in facilitating their development. Interesting article and worth a read. A sample: "Food price inflation is the real elephant in the room. Reducing emissions from farming entails large upfront capex, while environmental goals imply no further expansion of farmland. This puts upward pressure on food prices; [...] Higher prices might incentivize less waste, but without safety nets, a dangerous tradeoff exists between environmental and social goals such as zero hunger by 2030."

🍚 Each of us is producing 92.116 kg of CO2 just by eating rice That’s the amount of CO2 absorbed by 4 trees in a whole year! 🌳🌳🌳🌳 Rice farming is responsible for 12% of global methane emissions 😬 📈 And with a rising population, rice demand is expected to increase by 30% by 2050. Luckily, scientists at Temasek Life Science Laboratory are working to cut rice emissions by 20% 🙌🏻 But we can help too! 🌱 How? By switching to millets—they’re nutritious and have a lower environmental impact. Let’s save the world, one meal at a time. 🍴🌾 Have you tried any sustainable food swaps? Share your tips! 💬👇 #SustainableEating #ClimateAction #ReduceEmissions #MilletPower *** Found this interesting? Oritain is delighted to feature in another report by UBS, 'Grow, move, eat, repeat - Transitioning agri-food from sustainability liability to asset' 🌱. Agri-food is responsible for at least 90% of deforestation*, so how can organizations ensure they're operating sustainably? Download the report in the link below to learn about the many tools and solutions playing vital roles in food safety and sustainability ✅. A special thank you to author William Nicolle and UBS for the opportunity to feature in this important report. #oritain #ubs #supplychain #agrifood #traceability

Zero Hunger is the second goal of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2), aiming to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030. Zero Hunger involves: Food Security: Ensuring that all people have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food at all times. Sustainable Agriculture: Farming practices that protect ecosystems, conserve water, soil, and biodiversity, and reduce reliance on harmful chemicals. Poverty Reduction: Alleviating poverty, which is often a root cause of hunger, by supporting fair trade, local economies, and equitable distribution of food. Climate Action: Reducing the environmental impact of food production, mitigating climate change through eco-friendly farming, and protecting natural resources. Reducing Food Waste: Cutting down on food loss in supply chains, consumer behavior, and ensuring food is used efficiently. Achieving sustainability in zero hunger means creating resilient food systems that ensure everyone has enough to eat while protecting the planet for future generations. #Beresponsible #i-kitar #DIgitalKitarSemula

Today's global agrifood system emits one-third of all emissions. With global food demand estimated to increase to feed a projected population of 9.7 billion people by 2050, the increase in food production has been linked to unsustainable use of land and resources. This vicious circle leads to an increase in emissions. It's time to pivot towards more sustainable practices to mitigate the impact of the agrifood system on our planet. #sustainability #foodproduction #climatechange

Every day is #EarthDay at Lotus Foods! 🌏 Our commitment to organic and regenerative practices is generating more rice from less land, saving water, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and positively impacting the lives of farmers. 🌾 Regenerative Rice Cultivation: we remain steadfast in our dedication to regenerative rice cultivation through the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), known as More Crop Per Drop®. This methodology enhances soil health, reduces water consumption, and curtails methane emissions compared to conventional practices. 💦 Environmental Impact: since 2009, we've conserved 7.4 billion gallons of water, mitigated 69,300 tons of CO2 emissions, and reduced methane emissions by 40%, significantly contributing to #climatechange mitigation. 👩🏽🌾 Fair Trade Premiums: over 5,000 families have reaped the benefits of Organic and Fair Trade Premiums, bolstering equitable livelihoods for farmers. 🌍 #Are_Our_Food_Systems_Fueling_Climate_Change? 🍽️ For 10,000 years, human ingenuity has shaped #food_production to feed growing populations. But now, the very systems we rely on are stressing the planet. Shocking reports show that food production accounts for up to 37% of #global #greenhouse #gas_emissions, surpassing even the transportation sector! So, as we look ahead to feeding 10 billion people by 2050, how can we avoid ecological disaster? 🔍 #Key_Takeaways: 1️⃣ #Environmental_Cost_of_Our_Diets: Methane from livestock, emissions from fertilizers, and forest clearances for agriculture are all major contributors to climate change. 2️⃣ #Impact_on_Biodiversity: Our food systems are responsible for 60% of biodiversity loss on land, threatening countless species. 3️⃣ #The_Food_Waste_Dilemma: Despite producing more than enough food globally, millions go hungry due to unequal distribution and waste. 4️⃣ #Rethinking_Diets: Shifting to plant-based diets and reducing food waste could cut emissions massively—but is that change realistic? 💬 What Do You Think? • Should countries include #sustainable_food_system reforms in their climate commitments (NDCs)? • How can we balance the need for food security with the demand for sustainability? • Is a global shift toward plant-based diets the solution? The future of our planet depends on the way we produce and consume food. It’s time for a conversation on transforming our food systems for a sustainable tomorrow. 🌱💪 #FoodSystems #ClimateChange #SustainableAgriculture #GreenhouseGasEmissions #Biodiversity #FoodSecurity #PlanetaryHealth #SustainableDiets #UNEP #EcoFriendly

🌎 🍲 Today marks #WorldFoodDay and this year’s theme is the #RightToFood – right to foods for a better life and a better future. Everyone should have the right to nutritious, safe and affordable food. However, according to the FAO around 733 million people are facing hunger in the world due to climate change, political conflicts, economic decline, inequality and the pandemic. If we’re to see any kind of progress here, then we will need to transform our global food and farming systems so that they are working in harmony with nature and nourishing the health of people and the planet. A transition to more sustainable food and farming systems would deliver benefits for the climate, nature and health, but in order to scale these practices we will first need to develop a harmonised framework which allows us to measure, monitor and understand the sustainability impacts of our farming systems. This is what we're working towards through the Global Farm Metric coalition. Visit our website to learn more about the GFM framework and how it works: https://lnkd.in/dfJnRKZj To find out more about #WorldFoodDay2024 and how you can get involved, visit www.fao.org/world-food-day. #GlobalFarmMetric #FutureOfFood
