The only difference between parties when it comes to Ranked Choice Voting is that Republicans have backed their hatred of the idea up with laws. Democrats just couch their objections with “disenfranchisement” concerns and simply shelve any proposal that is put before the political body. Neither party wants RCV because it damages their stranglehold on the electorate. It has repeatedly shown the ability to elevate moderate and independent candidates over those who create great sound bites, fall in line with the party positions, and have the ability to rouse campaign donors for bigger donations that moderate candidates can. These two parties may act slightly different from county to county and state to state, but all party leaders know that it is in their best interest to remain and keep everyone on the same page, if they want to remain in positions of power. And entire industries are propped up by record spending on campaigns year after year. RCV is a great way to break up the political duopoly and actually encourage the electorate to investigate actual candidate positions when they pick who they rank in positions 1, 2, and 3.

Voter suppression is real. Raise funds & get hype on calls but keep an eye on your state, city and district. Double and triple check that you’re registered to vote. Ensure you address matches across your ID and profile. Check the times, dates and locations of your polls. Have back up plans for transportation. Save up funds if you have to take the entire day off to stand in line. Attend local meetings to gain insight. The rules are being changed. Hi all! I wanted to give a quick election update to those who are watching the results and wondering where things stand. First, THANK YOU to everyone who voted, and an extra thank you to all who have supported this campaign. I was the first to enter this race over a month before filing week, and while the race suddenly got very crowded during filing week, I'm proud that together we: 👉 Raised the most in individual donations among all six candidates. 👉 Spent about half of what the top two spenders in the race each spent, who also each contributed over $25,000 of their own personal funds. 👉 Enabled me to knock on every one of over a thousand doors across the district myself. 👉 Attended every debate, forum, and event, as well as hosting publicly available meet and greets across the district. (The current top two vote-getters didn't even attend any debates or forums.) Now, where do we stand? We're less than 300 votes from second place and thus advancing to the general, and there are over 10,000 votes left to count. Elections staff have let the public know that only about half of all expected ballots have been counted, and that major count increases are expected Thurs. and Fri. afternoon, and even potentially Sat. as well. While statistically I'll admit it's not likely, it's also not not zero. There was a very small update today, and I gained the most percentage out of any candidate. On this 4th of July week, it’s a good time to pause and reflect. Democracy has always been messy, always imperfect, and always a work in progress. If we’re paying attention, we know that democracy is an ongoing project. What’s easy to overlook is that the success of that ongoing project requires the active participation of all of us. And when that participation wanes is when opportunities arise for those who would undermine democracy or bend it to their own self-interested purposes. We are in such a time right now. If ever there were an all-hands-on-deck moment to protect and defend and expand the promise of democracy, this is it. And nonprofit leaders are in an extraordinary position to help expand that participation for those who stand to lose the most if democracy is subverted any further. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD POLITICIANS Why do these people keep staying in Washington for so long... Because of three groups of people keep re-electing them. The voters that vote for them. The people that make big donations supporting them. And the voters who no longer vote. If you are unhappy with this current state of affairs and you are in one of these three groups you are contributing to the problem. Plain and simple. If anyone is offended feel free to tell me why I am wrong or simply block me. Perfectly fine. There has been a lot of discussion in the media and on social media platforms about aging politicians and their abilities to do their jobs responsibly or cognitively. Then why are they still in office? Why aren't they just voted out? With most people unhappy with the government today (Federal especially) you would think the voters would keep showing them the door every 2-4-6 years. It happens some, but not nearly enough many voters and advocacy groups say. Term limits is the most common solution proposed for legislators. Why not try a little harder in primary and general elections first? Incumbents do have several advantages. They can raise money for their campaigns more easily because of self-interested parties. Since they are in the office full time (Congress mostly) they probably know more about the laws and the process. If you are an opponent and you challenge the incumbent on something and you get it barely wrong they can make you look bad and they will. I think that part of the reason laws are so complicated and so big is for incumbent protection purposes. If I know more about something than you do and you need my services I have power over you don't I? Here's probably the most unsettling reason. Well qualified people that would make good public servants no longer have the time or the money or want to have to raise all the money it takes to make credible run for office. If they have a good reputation, a family, and a nice life why risk all of that? Take a year out of your life and be in the public eye so that every single minute of your existence gets exposed, talked about, and criticized? See yourself on television being pummeled by distorted negative ads? Not many are willing to do that now and I can't say that I blame them in today's atmosphere. We have a very diluted pool now. So, if you are a voter truly desiring new people to represent you and spend your money more wisely, then how about a little better effort on your part? Especially this year. Many races all over the country are being lost or won by very thin margins. Those results next time around just might change for the better with more donations, more persuasion of others, and getting out the vote. Of course the government belongs to the people- the people that show up. In the absence of that, the big money moves in to persuade those that don't. That is where our once great system stands at this critical point in our nation's history. Where do you stand?
