The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on elections and democratic processes. The resolution calls on UN member states to eliminate barriers that prevent people of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities (SOGI) from participating in public affairs. However, many member states tried to remove language protecting people of diverse SOGI and diverse women from the resolution. This analysis dives into the attempts to remove SOGI and diversity language from the resolution and the ultimate preservation of this language. Everyone should be able to take part in elections and democratic processes. However, people of diverse SOGI face unique challenges in doing so. During elections, there is a documented uptick in violence against people of diverse SOGI, which can prevent them from voting. Voting ID requirements can pose challenges for transgender people whose legal names or gender markers do not match their gender identities or expressions. Countries that require voters to return to their hometowns to vote or organize voting locations by gender-segregated lines create barriers for LGBTI people. The UN General Assembly was right to include people of diverse SOGI in the resolution on elections, and we must continue to counter narratives to the contrary. Today is the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). The 2024 #RainbowMap published by ILGA-Europe shows that while authoritarian leaders across Europe continue to use the scapegoating of LGBTI people to divide and mobilise their electorates, others are conversly showing robust political will to honour commitments to advancing and protecting the human rights of LGBTI people.  The #RainbowMap shows only 1% positive change for LGBTI people in Macedonia from 2023, this year ranking 32nd with 30.5%, which is 20% less that the EU average and one of the lowest in the WB region.

Why the elections are so important and been discussed this time. IMO, We have gained pace of growth and it needs to be continued. Let’s vote for tomorrow, for the strong Bharat, the developed Bharat in 2047 when we would be celebrating our 100th year of Independence after being colony of British Rule for 200+ years. Another (expected yet) disturbing year for #LGBTI people across 49 countries in #Europe. #Italy maintains its 36th position, scoring 25.4% against a #EU average of 46.8%. 6️⃣ countries recognize trans #parenthood 6️⃣ - the countries in which LGBTI people have zero/null/inexistent legal protection from #discrimination 🔟 countries have banned #conversion therapy 🔟 countries don't have any legal or administrative procedure in place for legal #gender recognition 1️⃣ 8️⃣ - countries without any legal protection for same-sex partnerships 2️⃣ 7️⃣ countries that recognize gender identity and sexual orientation as qualifying criteria for #asylum seeking. Only 6 offer protection to #intersex asylum seekers.
