The $22 Billion Plan to Turn a Defunct #Airport Into a Small City A planned community for about 55,000 #residents in #Toronto will include the usual playgrounds, bike paths and shops. It will also feature 11 airplane hangars and more than a mile of #airport runway. That is because the 30 billion #Canadian dollar, equivalent to about $22 billion, #development will be located at the city’s former Downsview #Airport. #Airports have been repurposed as communities and parks before, but developers typically raze the original #infrastructure and start from scratch. Charting a path to net zero requires serious commitment. Fortunately, our design team, working closely with Massport, Suffolk Construction and luis vidal + architects in a collaborative CM at Risk delivery model, was up for the challenge. The result? Terminal E at Boston’s Logan International Airport is setting a new standard for sustainability and resiliency — with design features ranging from recycled materials to renewable energy sources putting this project on track for prestigious LEED Gold certification. The terminal’s shape and orientation were intentionally designed to harvest daylight, manage solar gain and even generate power. The south-facing façade’s photovoltaic glass turns sunlight into electricity, electrochromic glass on the north side changes tints to reduce the sun’s glare, and skylights bathe the terminal in natural light – all of which will significantly reduce annual electricity costs and keep travelers comfortable as they move through the terminal. Our design and construction team emphasized the selection of recycled, low carbon and carbon negative materials to reduce the terminal’s carbon footprint when building and then operating the terminal. The roof and building envelope are airtight and efficient, ready to stand up to New England’s harsh winters and hot summers.
