When hiring an athlete straight from sport has been a disaster: - No on-boarding process - No training and coaching - Lack of learning & development programs - Expecting them to hit the ground running with minimal support When it’s been a massive success: - The opposite to the above! Hiring salespeople between that $60-80k base range is a dangerous game. If you don’t have time to coach, guide & support and have no onboarding, learning and development processes, don’t hire a junior person & someone new to your industry! Athlete mindset - “show me what to do and I’ll do it!” If you don’t have time to “show me what to do,” don’t hire! Instead, pay more on base and hire someone senior! You gotta decide: 1. Hire a junior person, low cost and coach them 3-6 months. 2. Hire a senior person, high cost but my time is freed up. That’s it! No other options. #hiringathletes #recruitment #sales

You cant hide in pro sports. It’s impossible to coast by unnoticed. There are countless others eager and ready to take your spot at the drop of a hat. When it comes to sales, employers often seek individuals who embody qualities like determination, grit, consistency, and adaptability. These are the traits ingrained in athletes through years of training and competition. Sure, they may not always fit the conventional mold of the "perfect" candidate with all the qualifications and credentials, but I often hear hiring managers say they are looking for someone who will bet on themselves. That’s what these people have done their whole career. Next time you're hiring for a sales role, consider the athletes. They may not have followed the traditional career path, but they've proven time and time again that they have what it takes to go above and beyond in any endeavor. Other Duties Assigned - Assignment #10 Recruiting Cameo Story In my second year working in college football, I was more heavily involved in recruiting. We were in a recruiting brainstorming and we were talking about different ways to let the prospective student-athletes, their coaches, and their families know we were on the road recruiting. Someone suggested a video where we showed a coach packing up for the road. It was a great idea and won the consensus vote. BUT, we have no coach to use for video as they were on the road. I was chosen to be the “coach” and the rest is history. BENEFITS Recruiting Win I was able to help the recruiting and creative team with goal of letting those players we were recruiting we were on the road. Cross Departmental Collaboration I’ve talked about it in these posts and in many posts before teamwork is necessary for success. This video is a collaboration between player development, recruiting, creative media, sports information staff, coaches and equipment. The finished product is a nod to all of us working together and opens the door for more possibilities. New Gear I had to get new gear to make the video, so that’s always a benefit. I love gear and any chance at getting new gear had me there. S/o to all the equipment staffs I’ve worked with in the role. A: 1) Consistent positive attitude 2) Coachable/Desire to learn 3) Relentless work ethic 4) Personal accountability 5) Passion for revenue generation Q: You've had quality conversations with a hiring manager; how often should you stay in touch? A: If you're graduating in May 2024, monthly. If you're graduating in December 2024 or May 2025, quarterly. Email should include RELEVANT updates and what you learned. (Built out a partnership proposal for class, made 400+ cold calls for minor league baseball team in my city, etc.) Q: How long should your resume be? A: 1 page maximum. Prior to this we spoke with Hiring manager for 45 minutes with me explaining how I built brand strategies for world's biggest sportswear brands leading to success and even international awards. And the reason was: "We feel we are looking for someone with a bit more experience in strategy/brand vision." You sure you were there with me for 45 minutes, smiling, saying how awesome my projects are and how in-line this was with the position? Probably the refusal is for the better.
