Did you know that the Dependent Care FSA limit of $5,000 has not been changed since it was created in 1986?(1) If adjusted for inflation, that would be $13,900 in 2024. A great start would be for Congress to update the Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account rules and index it to inflation. In 2022 the average cost of childcare was $14,768. Childcare is considered affordable by the US Department of Health and Human Services when it is "no more than seven percent of a family's income."(2) In 2022 US Family Households had a median income of $95K. Here's a headline you didn't read: Presidential candidates devote 56 seconds to debating golf; 22 seconds to #childcare. Thursday night's painful US Presidential debate was remarkable not just for the apparent infirmity of the incumbent, or the outrageous lies of his predecessor, but the fact that #collectiveaction by American women and men put child care on the agenda in the form of a question posed by moderator Dana Bash. Although the unwillingness of Donald Trump to answer substantive policy questions, and the inability of Joe Biden to ignore the bait did not deliver hoped-for answers, getting the question posed was still a triumph. This is what effective mobilization can achieve. In addition to saluting Reshma Saujani and Moms First, I'm highlighting this success to motivate Canadian voters of the opportunities we, too, have to insist on attention to issues we care about in advance of our own electoral contests. "Last night, CNN made it clear that the voices of moms across the country matter by asking the candidates about their plan to address child care costs. Moms First and the 15,000 moms (as well as dads and allies) who signed our petition successfully elevated child care to the presidential debate stage. Because no family should be forced into debt to pay for child care. However, when asked directly about their plans to lower child care costs, both candidates spent the majority of the time bickering and only President Biden briefly addressed the question—leaving millions of moms and families out to dry. Moms First is disappointed that our presidential candidates failed to acknowledge the seriousness of our child care crisis and its impact on American mothers. As candidates vie for votes this election season, they should not underestimate the power of moms. We are a powerful constituency that cannot be ignored. We pay $2,400 a month for three kids in daycare. Double my rent. Lost my second job that covered 1/4 of that expense because the boss couldn’t communicate effectively, let alone PAY me. It is insane out here and I am defeated.
