Social media is fake, so here are 8 things I'm ashamed to admit. Yep, that's the latest trend that Gen Z and Millennials are using on TikTok to express their discontent with the over edited highlight reels that have become de rigueur across social media. Creators are using both gallery and face to camera pieces as their own personal confession boxes, admitting everything from high debt, eating disorders and relationship realities. Viewers are in turn using the comments section for their own cathartic confessions. It's another sign that 'candid' content will rule social media in 2024, but what can marketers and brands learn from it? - Step away from the editing tools and the corporate gloss - Not everything has to align with a content pillar. Break the norm and humanise your brand by doing something different - Share the good and bad - Gen Z deeply value integrity, and a little honesty can go a LONG way when it comes to connecting with your audience. ....and last but not least, for the love of grammar, please stop using 'aesthetic' as an adjective.

THE BIG IDEA Gen Z would rather influence than be astronauts Gen Z has never lived without the internet; the oldest of them was born in 1997, four years after it became widely available. Perhaps that explains why so many want to be influencers. Eighty-one percent of Gen Z respondents surveyed by decision intelligence company Morning Consult reported following influencers, with TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram among the most popular platforms. A majority of Gen Zers — and millennials — also said they rely on influencers to learn about new products and make purchasing decisions. These social media users are drawn to people who reflect a similar, yet aspirational, lifestyle and an authentic, knowledgeable vibe. Perhaps more interesting… … is that 57% of Gen Z respondents said they’d become an influencer if given the chance, compared to 41% of all US adults; 30% said they’d even pay for the opportunity. Another poll found one in four Gen Zers hope to become influencers, with 20% of men and 13% of women saying it was their only intended career path. A 2019 survey found that YouTuber was the most popular dream job among US and UK tweens, outweighing China’s top choice of astronaut. But why? For those of us who don’t enjoy thousands of strangers commenting on our lives, it may seem daunting — but influencing has its perks. It can be lucrative, with top influencers raking in millions. Even micro-influencers catering to a niche can pull off a decent side hustle. Influencers get free stuff — products, food, trips, event access, etc. Two teens told NPR they thought influencing would be doing what they liked — in this case, playing video games — while collecting paychecks and likes. You don’t have a boss (except the algorithm, of course). Plus, Gen Z has watched millennials struggle with crushing student loan debt. Though it certainly takes more than talking into your phone camera to become a successful influencer, it doesn’t require a college degree. BTW: There’s now a cottage industry to prop up influencers both actual and aspiring, including courses, conferences, agents, photo and video studios, and SaaS startups like Linktree. Even regular restaurants and stores have long appealed to Instagram.

The sad reality is that screens are impacting the relationship between parents & their kids The numbers from this report show that teens are spending around 10x more time on screens than with their parents This means that social media influencers, corporate marketing, & social agendas are all having a greater influence in shaping impressionable teens than their parents are 😢 How does this happen? There are many factors but its undeniable that kids mimic their parents Spend a little time people watching in a public place and its not hard to see parents staring at their screen while with their kids Kids grow up thinking this behaviour is normal. So when they get older, they want a screen just like their parents By the time this reality sets in for their parents its often too late. Kids are vulnerable and screens are addictive. Bad combination. How to prevent this? Well for starters, parents need to manage their own screen time & prioritize being present with their kids on a daily basis Modeling a healthy relationship with screens will set the tone for kids. As kids get older and screen become more available its important to monitor the content they consume and set healthy boundaries around when, where & how much screen time they get. These boundaries will help build the foundation for a healthy family dynamic as kids get older. Put in the work now before its too late. Influencers are everywhere. Gone are the days when you would ask around your friends for a physical copy of The Lonely Planet or make your way to a bookstore to check if they have the latest edition of the LP for the next trip you are planning. From travel to food, beauty to parenting, influencers are taking over the space. I believe this is due to the "reliability vacuum" that has been created across sectors, mainly led by inauthentic brands.
