My successor will know what to do, or at least who to blame when things go wrong. **HR:** Great attitude! Any plans for your farewell party? **AP:** I was thinking of something simple. Maybe just order a cake that says "Good Riddance!" **HR:** Oh, come on! We'll miss you. Any words of wisdom for the team before you go? **AP:** Sure. Remember, if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the HR team. **HR:** Ouch! I'll pretend I didn't hear that. What will you miss the most about working here? **AP:** Definitely the coffee machine. It's the only thing that’s ever truly understood my mood. **HR:** I'll make sure to let the coffee machine know. Any last requests? **AP:** Yes, if you could let me leave five minutes early every day until my last day, that'd be fantastic. **HR:** Five minutes? Dream big, AP. Here are some career milestone nuggets of wisdom for all the goal-driven EAs out there: 👣 Short-term goals: The stepping stones Every mega journey starts with a single step, right? As an EA, maybe you're eyeing mastering a new software, improving your time management, or even just getting through Monday without misplacing your coffee mug (again!). Short-term goals can be as simple or as ambitious as you want them to be. But here's the trick: Make them achievable and specific. 👀 Long-term goals: Eye on the prize Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Or 10? Perhaps leading a team of EAs? Spearheading a project? Or maybe even transitioning to a different department? It's like dreaming about where to vacation next but for your career. Fun, right? The clearer the vision, the more driven you'll be to reach it. 🤝 For any HR professionals or executives with EAs out there reading this, here's where you come in: Engage with your EAs. Understand their aspirations. Maybe even set up a monthly 'Career Chat' with them. It's not only about boosting their journey but also enhancing the dynamism of your whole organization. ☕Remember, a goal without a plan is just... well, it's like decaf coffee. It’s such a shame to be close to the end of 2023 and see that so many #talentacquisition professionals are still being #laidoff. I was laid off in December 2022 and have been working in the restaurant industry since then to make ends meet while I continue to search for what my next career move will be, but I have encountered the same issue: no one wants someone with “no experience in the field” Well, let me tell you something… TA professionals are some of the biggest hustlers in your offices: we are sales people, familiar with HR policies, employee engagement, payroll, we work cross functionally with executives on a daily basis, and on top of that we are familiar with all the roles you’re searching for (which if you’re curious like me it gets you down a rabbit hole of learning about #salesforce, #projectmanagement and more!) Clearly we have a lot of #transferableskills we can bring to the table… if you give us a chance. I don’t have to just rely on my story to know that countless of TA professionals out there are having a really tough time crossing over to other specialties due to incredibly unrealistic expectations from employers and to that I say: you’re missing out on some of the best and most well rounded employees you’ll find. My hope for this last quarter of 2023 is that more employers start to realize the power of transferable skills and begin to widen their search to include professionals in the process of switching careers.

How do we get Employees to Stay Longer at Work? About 2 weeks ago, I had noticed that more candidates were beginning to stay longer in their organizations, at least in some of the recruitments I have handled in recent time. That means some stuff are changing so I decided to conduct this poll. As you can see, one of the key determinant factors is an intangible factor, that’s Career Progression. What’s Career Progression: This is the process of climbing the ladder during your Career journey. Seeing a growth, moving forward, being promoted, finding new challenges, new opportunities and getting the most out of your work. Out of the 496 people that voted, about 208 people want to see the in their organization. Don’t call an Accountant that spends 8 years in your organization with the entering title of accountant, same accountant. What happens to other prefix that should come before “accountant”. Employers should create viable structures to accommodate different job titles in each department. A Sales rep of 5 years in your organization should see growth in salary, responsibilities, leading others, having opportunity to coach others and of course in job title. Let them see new role with more responsibilities — like from a marketing coordinator to a marketing manager Allow them make a lateral move within your company so that they can learn new skills and work on something they are passionate about. Making people feel valued represents about 169 out of the 496 people. People want to be: 👉🏽Appreciated 👉🏽Respected 👉🏽Want to see their opinions count. 👉🏽Recognised for performance. So organizations should start or improve in the following areas: 👉🏽Offer good compensation packages. 👉🏽Provide meaningful work. 👉🏽Prioritize a work-life balance. 👉🏽Start an employee recognition program. 👉🏽Celebrate achievements. 👉🏽Offer professional development and learning opportunities. 👉🏽Hire internally. ... 👉🏽Have performance pay or bonuses. Pay seems to be one of the least determinant factor but in this present harsh economy, is this a reality? BEING UNDEREMPLOYED COSTS YOU MONEY Here’s how I define “underemployed”: (1.) Working a part-time job OUTSIDE your chosen profession while looking for a full-time job IN your chosen profession. Or... (2.) Doing full-time work that barely exercises your skills and talent. The only logical reason to stick with situation 2 is that you like the organization you’re working for and are using this position as a stepping stone to a better position in the near future. Is that the plan? Do execs in that organization see it that way too? If that’s not the case, you should look elsewhere. Because if you believe time is money, being underemployed costs you money every single month that you’re underemployed. We can fix that (and situation 1 too). I've hired & onboarded a few dozen people. Had to fire a few. It's not always a straightforward process. And that was just for part-time employees - I can't imagine all the complexity that goes into working with an international team or managing several contractors. I complained about my 6-figure job Then perspective did something powerful... FYI, you're the first to hear this story... Because I've never told it before… During my corporate days I was a high performing executive in the sales organization… You know the type… - First in the office - Earning 6+ figures - Looking for promotions - Making the right contacts - Requesting special projects - Attending all the ‘special events’ - Going to all the dinners & parties  - Last one to leave the office everyday I wanted it all & knew I deserved it all Until I didn’t get something I wanted What could that be you’re thinking? For example… 😡 The promotion 😡 A particular desk  😡 The right category car All these things would bother me… Until the day something special happened… An eye-opening conversation with a colleague… She worked in another department… But her story sounded scarily similar to mine… In her department she was… - First in the office - Earning nice salary - Looking for promotions - Making the right contacts - Requesting special projects - Attending all the ‘special events’ - Going to all the dinners & parties  - Last one to leave the office everyday We had a heart to heart & she explained her frustrations in her role & her salary When I understood the difference in pay my perspective on my role changed… Of course, I had more risk of being fired... But here's the important part... I was doing something I really liked (solving complex client problems) And was receiving a great benefit! (huge salary, bonuses & recognition) From that day forward I appreciated my role - The good - The bad &  - The ugly I stopped complaining & started producing more… Working for big companies & doing what you like is a privilege you have… Perspective > complaining p.s. - Guess where I saw this graphic? 🙃
