"The gradual withdrawal of European banks from the shipping sector not only threatens the future competitiveness of the industry but also puts Europe in a strategic disadvantage," emphasized Costas Constantinou, Moore Greece, during his speech at the 15th Hydra Shipping Conference. The conference, organized by the Fraternity of Athenian Hydriots, was attended by leading Greek shipowners, senior management from shipping firms, consultants, academics, and members from historical maritime families of Hydra. #mooregreece #mooreglobal #mooremaritime #15thhydrashippingconference

Interesting to see how this pens out with a most powerful President China had since the days of Chairman Mao. The scorecard will have implications for Vietnam and Malaysia as they seek to exploit reserves in this region. Needed for both countries.Gated by China... Will be interesting to see the US response, muted, measured or in equal force as the Chinese Govt.

Since the Red Sea attacks, MR Atlantic and Pacific earnings have become more sensitive to the LR ballaster dynamics between the two basins. As LRs are predominantly used via Cape of Good Hope (COGH) for East-to-West middle distillate flows, operators are incentivised to stay in the West as the backhaul ballast to reposition has become considerably longer. However, the demand for “traditional” LR cargoes (gasoline to West Africa, and naphtha to East Asia) is softer, meaning that the LRs heading to the Atlantic will increasingly compete for Atlantic Basin cargoes with MRs. - Ioannis Papadimitriou, Vortexa

The Suez Crisis unfolds as a pivotal moment in a shifting global landscape, reminiscent of globalised trade affiliations, as the world fractures into new bloc formations in a post-Covid continuum. Dr. Moritz Brake, a maritime security expert leading Nexmaris consultancy in Köln, emphasized in a webinar on the shipping disruption caused by Houthi rebels in the Red Sea that this goes beyond mere shipping line disruptions. Brake contends that the Suez situation is a symptom of a larger disruption in the current global economic order, intentionally orchestrated by major geopolitical actors. Always a pleasure to collaborate with JOC.com and bring together so much of the data and analytical scope that S&P Global has to offer. Peter Tirschwell rightly notes that the wider global impact of the Houthi campaign against shipping in the Red Sea has been relatively limited so far, but it is an issue that is likely to remain for the foreseeable outlook; commercial decision-makers should plan accordingly. #geopolitics #RedSea #supplychain

The Lymantria Dispar, also known as the flighted spongy moth complex (FSMC), is a species of moth native to China, far-east Russia, and other countries of the Asia-Pacific, such as Japan and Korea. Several countries have introduced policies and regulations aimed at preventing the introduction of FSMC. Our latest guidance provides advice on how to reduce the risk of infestation and the necessary industry requirements: https://ow.ly/FcJO50SOX6S #shipping #maritime #infestation

Excellent comments by Jack in this piece to the effect that the stars are far, far from aligned to allow a resumption of normal shipping patterns. Moreover, he argues, if the Houthis can create this level of disruption to trade flows, gaining huge PR benefit, other non-state militias might feel they can do the same. For sure a topic at #TPM25

The recent Red Sea after attacks by Houthi rebels are in geopolitics what Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defence under the Ford and Bush junior administrations, famously called the “unknown unknowns”. The Suez canal handles about 12% of global trade. Rerouting shipments around the Cape of Good Hope adds about 3,000-3,500 nautical miles (6,000km) to journeys connecting Europe with Asia, adding about 10 days to the duration of the trip. The impact on traffic and freight costs was immediate. Unforeseen inflationary chocs like these happen and should not be underestimated. #ecplu #longtermview #longterminvesting #valueinvesting #equities

These are also indicators of what can happen with any choke point, including routes that pass through the Taiwan Strait, areas of the South China Sea, the Straits of Malacca, and so on. Ocean traffic is critical to trade, economic security, food security, and more.
"The Suez’s problems are geopolitical and those in Panama are climate-based, but both are roiling global trade. Cargo volumes through the Suez and Panama canals have plunged by more than a third. Hundreds of vessels have diverted to longer routes, resulting in delivery delays, higher transportation costs and economic wreckage for local communities. Ship operators are bracing for months of uncertainty in the waterways where some 18% of global trade volumes crossed last year." #shipping #trade #suezcanal #panamacanal https://lnkd.in/esj7Ryka

The current conflicts and security tensions in the Red Sea region are not just local concerns; they reverberate globally, impacting maritime transport, shipping costs, and economic activities. With over 15 percent of global trade passing through the Red Sea, ensuring its security is paramount for both regional stability and international commerce. The Red Sea's geopolitical significance lies in its role as a crucial route connecting Africa, Asia, and Europe, attracting major powers and regional players vying for strategic advantages. Historical events, such as control during World War II and the establishment of the Suez Canal, underscore its enduring importance.
