#Tuesday reading recommendation: ➡️ Enhancing Communication and Accountability: The One Household, One Phone Project in Mali. 🌍📱 Our Steering Group member UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency's "One Household, One Phone" project is making strides in improving two-way communication and accountability with displaced communities in #Mali. This initiative, targeting 400 households of refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and returnees in the #Mopti and #Kayes regions, showcases a promising practice in community engagement. 🔗 Programme Overview: Access to internet connectivity and electronic devices is crucial for ensuring effective communication with forcibly displaced individuals, especially in areas with challenging humanitarian access. By providing smartphones, internet access, and #solarenergy kits, this project promotes digital inclusion and facilitates information-sharing about rights and available assistance. 🤝 Community-Centered Approach: Using a participatory methodology, UNHCR worked closely with community members and NGO partners, adhering to an age, gender, and diversity (AGD) approach. A Proposal for International Collaboration to Strengthen Social Protection for FDMN/Rohingya Community: The FDMN/Rohingya crisis continues to be a pressing humanitarian issue, with countless individuals facing displacement, violence, and a lack of essential services. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that prioritizes #SocialProtection. While the Bangladesh government and numerous humanitarian organizations have been commendable in their efforts to support the FDMN/Rohingya community, the scale of the crisis necessitates a concerted international response. I propose a collaborative initiative to establish a #SocialProtectionCenter in Bangladesh specifically designed to address the unique needs of the FDMN/Rohingya population. By working together, we can leverage the expertise and resources of international organizations, NGOs, and local partners to develop and implement effective #SocialProtectionPrograms. Key areas of focus would include: 1. Capacity Building: Training and development programs for local staff to enhance their skills in social work, counseling, and community mobilization. 2. Research and Advocacy: Conducting research to identify gaps in social protection services and advocating for policy changes to improve the situation of Rohingya refugees. 3. Community Engagement: Fostering partnerships with community-based organizations to ensure that social protection initiatives are responsive to the needs of the Rohingya population. Call to Action: I urge organizations and individuals working in the humanitarian sector to join this effort and explore opportunities for collaboration. Globally, there are currently the highest levels of displacement on record. At the end of 2022, there were 108.4 million people forced into displacement worldwide, over half of whom were female. As we commemorate #WorldRefugeeDay, we highlight the crucial role that refugee women led organisation play at the frontlines of responding to and preventing Gender Based Violence. At the frontline of GBV prevention and response, refugee women-led organisations are often the first responders to humanitarian crises and displacement, providing lifesaving GBV services and support alongside other interventions that tackle the underlying drivers of inequality, often with limited or no funding. Our Work: Since our inception amidst the crisis in Afghanistan in 2021, Omid International has: ·      Supported over 80 vulnerable Afghan women and their families to escape Afghanistan and find refuge in other countries. ·      Delivered emergency funds to over 50 displaced Afghan women and children fleeing the Taliban. ·      Provided employment and sustainable livelihoods for over 70 Afghans, both within Afghanistan and abroad. ·      Established a training hub in Turkey, currently delivering a program for 15 Afghan refugees to become work-ready and train future refugees. Empowering Afghan Women: Through coaching, mentoring, and job provision, we empower female refugees to create a sustainable, independent future for themselves and their families. Our Founder: Rahela Sidiqi was born in rural Afghanistan, where she experienced the challenges of conflict firsthand. Every single day of each month and years we see and hear of children and young women either being killed or malnourished in the most desolate corners of the world due to endless civil wars and tribal wars. Yet the so called UNHCR with its partner organization are not able to adjust their employment and volunteering system. For example in Sudan, The Democratic Republic of Cong almost each day a child and young women is either malnourished or the young woman is rapped leaving alone those who are killed in the bushes. My question is how and why these organizations remain so hard to either to adjust their system. Resolving conflicts are some time hard but it is possible if the a third party is used. Also hunger, and refugees children's and women including elderly health is a paramount yet it can be done. History is a good answer to resolve all these questions that we are witnessing or the challenges people are facing. Few days ago when I saw a job position for Assistant Programme Officer with UNHCR in El Gedaref and several in Sudan my feigning dreams to jump to utilize my Multicultural and Community Mediator and Cultural community outreach coordination ship develop peace building in that broken apart country. But to find the application process is something is stumbling block at the same time the UNHCR sitting in Nairobi Kenya keeping on knocking candidates. However, the question is will the UNHCR human resources such Gozde Ozdur and her colleague be able to help in any assistance in the application process. Refugees are the best answer to all the suffering they face from lack of food and conflict resolution if they are well handled. We need to consider putting your self as UNCR counselor as the solution or to answer all refugees nor conflict crisis that's never true. You are neither there to transform refugees but you are only there to lead them to find an answer to their problems. Inconclusion I'm still appealing if some of us can be offered to apply our skills.

❗ Half of the refugees around the world are children under 18, but there is little data on their experiences of violence in these contexts. 🇺🇬 The first-ever Humanitarian Violence Against Children and Youth Survey in Uganda aims to address this urgent data gap. Its findings show that: 📊 ~50% of females and males aged 18-24 have experienced sexual, physical and/or emotional violence before age 18. 📊 26% of girls and 58% of boys aged 13-17 missed school due to an experience of sexual violence. 📊 Children’s first experience of each form of violence often occurs after their arrival at refugee settlements. 📊 Disclosure of violence is very low, with only 17% of males and 5% of females who experienced sexual violence in childhood seeking help. ✊ The survey findings will be crucial to inform prevention, healing, and justice efforts to #EndViolenceAgainstChildren in these contexts. This #WorldRefugeeDay, it is critical to remember that #OlderPeople make up approximately 8 million of those forcibly displaced worldwide. They encounter unique challenges, including discrimination, exclusion, and safety concerns. They also face significant barriers to accessing the support and assistance they need, which can be further complicated by factors such as gender and disability. Displacement disrupts families, alters roles, and breaks down community and support networks. Unfortunately, host communities, governments, and humanitarian agencies often overlook older people, failing to acknowledge their potential contributions to response and reconstruction efforts. To ensure the protection and inclusion of older people, we call on UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency and all those involved in refugee response efforts to: 1. Enhance the capacity of all actors to respond to the rights and needs of older refugees 2. Enhance the participation of older people in refugee response 3. Guarantee appropriate and accessible assistance 4. Provide access to national systems e.g. social protection and health systems 5. Ensure the collection, analysis, use and reporting of sex, age and disability disaggregated data in order to improve the data environment with regard to older refugees 6.
