WORLD COMMUNICATIONS DAY 2024 . . . 12 May 2024 was World Communications Day. It was established by Pope Paul VI in 1967 as an annual celebration that encourages us to reflect on the various opportunities and challenges that the modern means of social communication afford the church to communicate the gospel message. But beyond just enabling us to share the gospel message, the tools of communication such as social media, radio, and motion picture, affect and impact all of us in more ways than one. By giving more thoughts to how communications media have shaped our lives, perhaps, we will be more mindful of using the tools to enrich relationships and be more careful of the negative effects. Here are some questions I’ll be reflecting on with regards to my use of communications media: -       Are we encouraging more open communication? -       Have we allowed one another to speak? - Are we listening more? -       Do we jump to conclusions without active listening and clarifying? More importantly, does my daily communications promote peace, foster good dialogue, and facilitate cooperation among people and societies? As Epictetus, the Greek Stoic philosopher so rightly said, “We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as we speak.” Agree? How are you encouraging better communications? Interesting insight from the CIPR 2024 State of the Profession report, put together by Ben Verinder. The annual survey, this year hearing from more than 2,000 practitioners, says that the strategic function of public relations is now being realised. It states: “Seven out of 10 in-house professionals say their organisations are positive about the value and strategic contribution of the role of public relations. However, far fewer say their organisations have clear measures of success for PR when it comes to organisational outcomes.” PR is at its best when working within the board room (although the corridors tend to host the most insightful and interesting conversations). Tools are great, I have nothing against network IDS, IPS, EDR, etc… but those should be built on top of a solid foundation of information security basics. Do you have a documented list of every device in your organization that can store, process, or transmit information? Is your network properly broken up in different sections to help keep a threat actor from more easily moving through your network? Too often we go for the shiny things while we lack on the basics.

Recently I was asked how we (communications staff) decide what information we should make public. I was surprised by the question but I quickly realized people don't really understand what we do. When you work in government the public sees you in your ivory tower (with the shutters closed) and they assume you are keeping secrets and only sharing the information that makes your government look good. That just isn't the case. We share the good, the bad and the embarrassing (with an apology). And just saying, "it's on the website," isn't good enough. If no one knows to look for it, then we have not communicated it. My team has developed a culture of listening. That means we actually read and respond to questions on social media, we read the community social media pages to learn what people are talking about, we read the local paper (and the comments on the stories), we pay attention to the call/email volumes, and we listen when a city official casually says they got a lot of inquiries about an issue. It makes us go hmmmm. If that is what people are talking about maybe we need to communicate about it more. Maybe they are questioning this thing because they don't have all the information or maybe there is some misinformation out there. We are communications professionals with high professional standards. That means the work we do serves the public interest. The only way to know what information will serve the public interest is by actually listening to the public to find out what interests them. Then we go to where the conversation is happening and we add to it with some facts and links to more information. That is usually social media. But sometimes the conversation is bigger than that and it means we actually need a full campaign to educate people about important issues like how to be fire smart, or bear aware, or a good nieghbour. So, no, we don't just communicate the stuff we find interesting. Well, ok, we do that too because we think everyone is as curious as we are. We wondered how long it takes to mow the lawn at our biggest park so we asked and then shared the information (2 days). Our fun facts really are fun. But, importantly, we just listen and try to help. As Communication Practitioners, we need to advise the powers (Executive management) that be in our respective organisations to move away from old Public Relations functions and adopt strategic communication practices . Old Public Relations functions are no longer relevant in addressing the ‘wicked- problems of the modern societies .
