We’ve never been more certain about the power of moms. 💪 Why? Because throughout history, mothers have been at the forefront of every major movement. And, as we saw with our petition to CNN, we are once again taking the lead, and fighting to fix the broken child care system for ourselves, our children, and families across the country. Tonight, as the candidates step onto the debate stage, moms will be listening. As Moms First’s CEO and Founder, Reshma Saujani said in her piece in CNN: “Maybe, finally, [the candidates] will see us as whole people, vie for our vote and treat us as the true, powerful constituency we are.” Read Reshma's full piece in CNN here: https://lnkd.in/ekttrAEB

Here's a headline you didn't read: Presidential candidates devote 56 seconds to debating golf; 22 seconds to #childcare. Thursday night's painful US Presidential debate was remarkable not just for the apparent infirmity of the incumbent, or the outrageous lies of his predecessor, but the fact that #collectiveaction by American women and men put child care on the agenda in the form of a question posed by moderator Dana Bash. Although the unwillingness of Donald Trump to answer substantive policy questions, and the inability of Joe Biden to ignore the bait did not deliver hoped-for answers, getting the question posed was still a triumph. This is what effective mobilization can achieve. In addition to saluting Reshma Saujani and Moms First, I'm highlighting this success to motivate Canadian voters of the opportunities we, too, have to insist on attention to issues we care about in advance of our own electoral contests. Informed Opinions' own Balance the Power initiative will be organizing similar efforts in the coming months. If you'd like to be notified of ways that you can add your voice to help exert similar influence, please visit https://lnkd.in/dxQA6z4a and sign up to support collective action in pursuit of progressive policies that make a difference to families here.
"Last night, CNN made it clear that the voices of moms across the country matter by asking the candidates about their plan to address child care costs. Moms First and the 15,000 moms (as well as dads and allies) who signed our petition successfully elevated child care to the presidential debate stage. Because no family should be forced into debt to pay for child care. However, when asked directly about their plans to lower child care costs, both candidates spent the majority of the time bickering and only President Biden briefly addressed the question—leaving millions of moms and families out to dry. Moms First is disappointed that our presidential candidates failed to acknowledge the seriousness of our child care crisis and its impact on American mothers. As candidates vie for votes this election season, they should not underestimate the power of moms. We are a powerful constituency that cannot be ignored. And we deserve real, substantive solutions to this crisis." Thank you to Katrina Nattress and Motherly® for elevating our movement! https://lnkd.in/ezbsUm88

Kamala Harris’s running mate Governor Tim Walz signed an executive order protecting the “rights of trans children” to receive gender-affirming care. He called protecting children's rights to permanently damage their genitals “empathy.” “You do not need your elected officials to give sermons, but you darn sure should expect them try and live one. And in Minnesota, we're gonna try and live that decency that kindness that inclusion. So as pens were raised in sign and brought fear... and hatred...and nothing positive. We're gonna put pen to paper today that say, this state will protect you.” The order will direct state agencies to ensure people seeking gender-affirming care in Minnesota will not face legal repercussions. That includes out-of-state people seeking care - state agencies will not be allowed to cooperate with other states where gender-affirming care is criminalized. The order also directs state agencies to refuse approval of health plans that do not cover gender-affirming care and to investigate any complaints about denial of gender-affirming care.

Recent findings from The Times shed light on the urgent need for improved care for "looked after" children, a cause close to our hearts at The For Baby's Sake Trust. Data reveals concerning trends in the privatised residential care sector, where costs are soaring while quality often lags behind. Shockingly, the average annual cost of a private residential placement is £281,000, with significant profit margins for operators. Meanwhile, the number of children placed with foster families is declining, exacerbating the crisis. The impact on #YoungPeople is profound, with many experiencing disruptions to their #Education, #MentalHealth challenges, and increased vulnerability to homelessness and exploitation. It's clear that urgent action is needed to address these systemic issues and ensure the wellbeing of vulnerable children. At The For Baby's Sake Trust, we advocate for investment in not-for-profit local provision and early intervention strategies to support families and prevent children from entering #Care unnecessarily. It's time to prioritise the wellbeing of our most vulnerable children and ensure they can thrive. Read more: https://bit.ly/3Ilnz1H

Father’s Day is June 16! I want to illuminate the unique struggles male caregivers face and the support they require to navigate their caregiving journey effectively. Caregiving is often perceived as a role traditionally filled by women, but in the United States, millions of men are stepping into this demanding and emotionally challenging position. Male caregivers, whether they are husbands, sons, brothers, or friends, provide crucial support to their loved ones, often without the recognition or resources they need. Read more about how male caregivers play a vital role in the lives of their loved ones, offering unwavering support and care and the unique challenges that can impact their well-being and effectiveness as caregivers in my blog post: The Unsung Heroes: Male Caregivers in the US. https://buff.ly/3XqoA1k

In popular stories or fairy tales, we often don't see disabled people and when they are present, we see them as scary, evil characters out to harm others. In many ways, these stories paint a picture of how we see disabled people in society. We decided this needed to change. We wanted to write the books we wanted growing up; the book we would gift each other because it resonated with us. In this collection, published by HarperCollins Publishers releasing soon, the stories teach us more than one way of living life and how love, empathy, acceptance, and friendship can bring us closer. We hold close our experiences of being misfits, of self-doubt, isolation, bullying, and discrimination. A book conceptualised by Nidhi Goyal, written by 13 disabled women, edited by Richa Kaul Padte, workshopped with Aditi Rao, and held together by Srinidhi Raghavan, this book doesn't shy away from presenting hardships of our lives and the ways in which we can thrive. And They Lived.. Ever After is available for Pre-Order Now: https://lnkd.in/gFM8F_c7.

Today, the Senate Inquiry into missing and murdered First Nations women and children will release a major new report. This is a critical moment for our country to address the disproportionate rates of family violence inflicted upon Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander women and children. Safe and Equal board member, Sue-Anne Hunter says, "All First Nations women and our children deserve love, care and respect. But our communities are losing mothers, wives, aunties, friends and kids at horrible rates. While official figures show we are more likely to experience violence and death, this is not the full story. So many experiences are not reported, not investigated, not seen as worthy of attention. We know that racism within systems and structures creates this violence, and creates barriers to addressing and ending this violence. The solutions must be community-led. We must listen to Aboriginal women, and we must act now." Safe and Equal stands in solidarity with all First Nations women and children and joins their calls for concerted action and investment to end this violence. We stand with our members working with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and support their contributions to this inquiry. Today, and all days, we stand alongside you in acknowledging the work that needs to be done to prevent and respond to violence experienced by First Nations women and children.
