Every business leader should be signing this. Here's why:
1. With childcare being more affordable and accessible, your employees who have children aren't as dependent on raises. This might come off as, "you don't have to give parents raises," and that is NOT what I'm saying here. Instead, picture this scenario: you're a parent who is heading back to work after having a baby, but you realize that the only child care available is going to cost more than your rent. What do you do? You need child care to work. You need work to have child care. So, you do what anyone would do, and ask for more money. Is this a fair reason for a raise? Not really. Is it a valid reason? Absolutely. You might think that affordable child care isn't your problem, but until our governmental systems fix it, it's positioned as your problem. Put more pressure on the people making the real rules around here.
2. With more affordable and accessible childcare, you'll have less burnout, more productivity, and less turnover (from both parents and non-parents). Imagine this: A parent can only afford a couple of days a week of professional childcare, and the other days are supplemented with a grandparent to watch their child. Well, that grandparent isn't the most reliable. And professional childcare isn't available if the child gets sick (children get 8-12 illnesses a year on average. That's nearly once a month). So the parent juggles kid(s) and works until the late hours of the evening, and dumps whatever overflows onto colleagues. Those colleagues get burnt out on the extra workload. If there was a better childcare system that existed, that parent would be able to work more, stress less, and keep the company's ecosystem flowing. So, why don't you just fire all the parents to fix the problem then? Yeah, right. Talk to my lawyer, then think about how parents contribute to our GDP. Sectors like healthcare, insurance, education, real estate, retail and consumer goods would crumble. They all bank on us spending money for the endless amounts of needs our families have.
