However, nowadays, technology and VFX help create something beyond imagination. Yet, when we reflect on the history of cinema, the essence of creativity and the implementation of ideas remain unparalleled. These creative endeavors cannot be replaced solely by technological advancements.
Peter Ellenshaw was an influential matte designer and special effects artist who contributed to many memorable Disney films such as Swiss Family Robinson, Mary Poppins, Pollyanna, and Dick Tracy. In a fascinating clip, Ellenshaw demonstrates his innovative technique of painting on glass to create ships for the classic 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, explaining the magic behind the process in detail.

Disguise, Inc., the costume division of JAKKS Pacific, Inc., announced a new agreement with Innersloth (via Dual Wield Studio) for global costume rights for Among Us. With first product planned for a fall 2025 launch, Disguise takes on worldwide rights to design, market, manufacture, and distribute costumes and costume accessories reflective of the game’s unique characters and designs. Developed by Innersloth, Among Us is a social deduction game set in space that revolves around one simple hook: one or more random players among your crew are intent on sabotaging the ship and killing off the crew. Among Us rose to popularity in 2020 since its release date in June of 2018 and, at its peak, saw 7% of the entire planet playing the game. An animated show is also currently in development at CBS Studios produced by Owen Dennis ("Infinity Train"), with an all-star voice cast including Elijah Wood, Randall Park, and Yvette Nicole Brown. #toys #toyindustry #pressrelease #news

The whole creative department of the agency had been working on the Dr Pepper Australian launch brief - for months. Art Director, Rog, and I were getting nowhere, and frankly put this up as a bit of a laugh... scribbled up in a panic half-an-hour before a presentation. It was kind of on-brief... I guess. The brief was difficult. And probably wrong. It positioned Dr Pepper as "unusual" tasting. The "Americanness" of it was another touchpoint. This was the era of films like Independence Day. What I did like about the script was the notion of something huge seen through the lens of the laconic Australian archetype (at the time). Anyway, we presented it. The client liked it. It researched OK. I think 3rd best out of 6 ideas. And that was enough to send us on our way to the Big Apple and Lady Liberty. The ad was directed by the late, great Peter Cherry, one of the founders of AWARD with the brilliant Paul Butterworth in charge of special effects. It cost $1.1m dollars to make... these were the early days of CGI... and I think the execution more than stands up today, technically. It was also a bit of an unmitigated disaster. Too apologetic about the product. Australians, as it turned out, wouldn't "get used to it". But it was a wonderful piece of cinematography and I'm still thrilled to have had the opportunity to shoot it. Working with an American crew (who had worked with Tom Cruise the week before). The way they could seamlessly shut down bits of NYC to accommodate us. Including Liberty Island. I climbed the statue by myself in about 15 minutes - it usually took about 4 hours of queueing alone. And flying in a chopper in and out of various streets and buildings of Manhattan. This was pre-9/11. One of those special things that happen in a career... Funnily enough, I think the ad is better today than it was back then. Nostalgia, eh. #specialeffects #cinematography #copywriting #americana #iconic #australia #soda

Camo TV If you don’t want your television to be the focal point of your living space, try painting the wall behind it black. This will essentially camouflage it, making it much less dominant from a visual perspective. #jeanclark #bayleyswhanganui #bayleysnz #altogetherbetter #realestateagent #realestate #whanganuirealestate #manawaturealestate #property #whanganui #lifestyle #lifestyleproperty

We had a right old snark-fest yesterday in our company meeting about what I see as brands exploiting voiceover talent. My perspective? Years of home studios has meant years of compromises to quality result. It sort of reminds of when agencies invest in in-house studios. It always starts out with the best of intention, but before long it requires too much on-going additional monies in equipment and talent. Studios are expensive. Technology moves fast. With the return these days for voiceover work, it’s probably only worth the on-going commitment from 5% of the voiceovers out there to have a home recording space. No matter what any agent tells you. We were discussing a job where a young girl left a skiing trip and went to a hotel where her father purchased source connect so she could record a line on a commercial in a closet. A lot of hassle and money for a major brand that most certainly could have bought an hour in a studio. That solution, which used to be basic costs for agencies, seems to have not even been considered. Totally nuts and exploitive of talent. And if you feel the burn to drop money on a home setup, reach out to this guy. Frank Verderosa
Tonight I did what I often do at night: consulting with voice actors to improve their setup from home. And it’s frustrating sometimes, because if you live in a major city like NY (where one of tonight’s clients is) the line on all breakdowns that says “must have a home studio” should really be removed. I’ve never seen it mandated by my agency clients when I do casting. It seems to be some sort of blanket casting or agent mandate. Ask any engineer at a studio, and they’ll tell you the same: we’d rather have the actor in our booths and not crammed in their closets. Not all home studios are created equal. So we really need to say “must have a home studio unless you live where the job is being produced”. Most actors I talk to would prefer to be in the studio as well. But tonight, my last consult for 2023, was why I love doing it. Someone showed up having done all the right things that just didn’t add up to a great sound. Some of it was related to advice from coaches that doesn’t work for tight home booths (ie: forget anyone ever showed you that pinky to thumb distance thing. It never works st home). But mostly it was the wrong mic for the booth. A large diaphragm condenser in a 3 x 3 space. Adjusting position helped. Moving it as far as possible from any boundaries was an improvement. When I mentioned how a shotgun mic often helps in these tighter spaces, they said “oh- I was just given one!” We made the switch and it was dramatically better. This particular shotgun lacks a little focus and top end compared to a 416, so I suggested trying the 4K button on their SSL2, which I almost always tell people to avoid. And boom! We went from a boxy, comb filtered nightmare to a clear, bookable sound. It’s the little things. And that’s a wrap on consulting for 2023. I’m here for you starting in January! Cheers!
