Hey there, yes, you. Don't shut that door just yet. Surprised? The people behind you are crying, praying "If you get there before us, don't close the door on us" Times are tough, economies worldwide are hitting hard, and it feels like the more we struggle to stay afloat, the more the economy pulls us under. Jobs are becoming scarce, making the hunt for employment a daunting task. It's like a chaotic tide of applications flooding in, with hopeful candidates washing ashore, all aiming for that job that guarantees a meal on the table. Kudos to everyone putting their best foot forward in to build something for themselves, or at least take a loaf of bread home. But here's the catch: amidst this sea of applicants, there's a troubling trend of poorly prepared, or half-baked candidates. I had a chance to chat with a friend who works in HR, and during one of our casual conversations, she mentioned, "On average, I have to sift through 300 CVs a day." While the number might not seem staggering, consider that some handle up to 500, and you'll grasp the enormity of the task, especially when you know how mind-numbing it can be for a recruiter. And hey, I'm not just saying it, research has shown that 60% of recruiters admit to disliking the resume-sorting process. Now imagine this: someone who's already not thrilled about their job has to convince themselves that you're the right fit for a position. And then you deliver a performance that's akin to a Man-Utd meltdown. To put it simply, you've already disappointed them, and like in matters of the heart, they'll be cautious about the next person who comes along. Now, multiply this heartbreak by 30 or 40 times in a single day. It's enough to make recruiters grow a thick skin and, ultimately, slam the door shut on other hopefuls vying for their shot at a career. It's no wonder recruiters start demanding 7 years of experience, complete with a portfolio to prove it. So, please, don't let your incompetence be the reason that door closes on the person behind you. Seek out training, and volunteer to learn and grow. "Why did they leave after only 18 months?" "They've been with the same company for 10 years...why?" As executive recruiters, we manage a myriad of tricky issues - compensation, personal and family details, confidentiality. The job-hopping/moving around/disloyal vs. stagnant/unmotivated/too loyal conversation is a delicate balance. Perhaps there is a Goldilocks "just right" answer, but we have yet to encounter it. Some of our employer partners want that longevity - they love when they see stability. Other employer partners of ours see someone in the same seat for a long period of time and the questions range from - did they not seek career growth? Were they never recruited for an external position? Our role, more times than not, is to tell the story and explain the rationale from an unbiased perspective. Long post alert!!! Sometimes as a recruiter, you get very invested in the career of your candidate. Yes we're working to fill roles but we're also trying to assist you to make the right choice from an objective standpoint. Counter-offers occurs often in our sweet T&T. Employers are informed that their valuable employee is leaving and they decide its the right time to give them that increase that they have deserved for years now. I'm not going to lie, it hits hard when a candidate accepts a counter-offer from an Employer who didn't value them years before. Imagine you need to state you're leaving in order to receive the compensation that you so long deserved. This new company saw your value in a hour or less in your interview. They decided yes, this is the person I want for me team. My tip to you is don't accept a counter offer only because its higher. There are other reasons that you wanted to leave the Company. Its not always only about the money, its about a better opportunity, growing out of your comfort zone, learning and experiencing a new culture. Don't let the money keep you from a world of opportunities!

Candidates, you will get asked about employment gaps. It doesn't matter if you think it's right or wrong, many recruiters and hiring managers are still going to ask, so you need to be prepared to answer them. Here is a little guidance on how: Be confident in your response, you have NOTHING to be ashamed of. Maybe you were laid off and have struggled to find a new role in this market, join the club. Maybe you took time off to care for a family member in need, that means you are human and have people you care about! Maybe the reason is personal and you don't want to share. "I had a personal matter that required my full attention, so I temporarily took a step back from my career. I'm now thrilled to be fully committed to finding my next role" -should suffice. You can easily find these people on LinkedIn. These people will be more apt to help you in your search than strangers. 3. Limit the amount of time you spend applying for jobs online. Sure, you could get lucky, but when you look at the number of applicants who are applying for the same job as you are, you'll see that the odds are not in your favor.
