Although the amount of discussions about the circular economy have almost tripled over the past five years, global circularity remains in decline. In our recently published study, a circularity index was developed to track trends in #EU #Circulareconomy, and its projected trajectory up to 2035 has been presented. This projection provides a benchmark for countries to assess their progress towards #sustainability goals. The analysis revealed a promising trend of increasing circularity in the coming years. However, to meet the ambitious circular economy targets (in terms of maximizing #recycling and minimizing #landfilling), the pace of improvement must significantly accelerate. To achieve these targets, countries will need to adopt a range of proactive policies, including: (1) Accelerating permit approval times for MSW treatment facilities: This will help to reduce the time it takes to bring new MSW treatment facilities online, thereby facilitating increased recycling rates. (2) Introducing more flexibility in state aid rules: This will empower governments to provide more financial support to the recycling industry, making recycling more affordable and accessible to businesses and households. (3) Empowering service users or waste generators: This can be achieved by giving households and businesses more control over their waste disposal choices, which can encourage recycling and reduce landfilling. (4) Implementing tax credits for recycling and waste reduction: This will make recycling more attractive to businesses and households, incentivizing them to adopt sustainable practices. (5) Leveraging specialized funds: Governments can establish specialized funds to invest in recycling infrastructure and technologies, further boosting the recycling industry's capacity. Key Highlights: Framework for Ecodesign Requirements: Establishes guidelines for specific product groups to improve their circularity, energy performance, and environmental sustainability. Applies to nearly all physical goods in the EU market, with exceptions like food and feed. Wide Range of Requirements: Includes durability, reusability, upgradability, reparability, circularity-inhibiting substances, energy and resource efficiency, recycled content, remanufacturing, recycling, carbon and environmental footprints, and a Digital Product Passport. Digital Product Passport: Provides easily accessible information on products' environmental sustainability, including durability, reparability, recycled content, and availability of spare parts. Aids consumers and businesses in making informed decisions, supports repairs and recycling, and enhances transparency regarding environmental impacts. 🚀 Impact by 2030: Expected to save 132 Mtoe of primary energy, equivalent to around 150 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
