Don't look back at your first job as just a 'job' because it was so much more. You probably don't realise it, but your first, probably part-time, job taught you loads of things. For me, I started off as 'just a housekeeper' cleaning (some disgusting) rooms. Why people leave half eaten food on the bedside table, I don't know. As soon as I turned 18, my manager boosted me up to reception and all of a sudden, came responsibility. I was in charge of the hotel for 7 hours, whilst all the guests were checking in. I had to manage a team of housekeepers if I was doing an early shift. Yikes. I didn't even think about it. My confidence grew, I developed my leadership and learned how to be stubborn with demanding guests (no, you can't stay for an extra night and pay later!) What was a part time job taught me so much to use in my 'big girl job.' What was your first job, and what did it teach you? #hospitality #marketing #socialmedia

My first job was as a papergirl delivering newspapers ….as soon as I was 16 I was given a Saturday girl job working in the shop behind the counter. Within 3 months I was team leader within 4 months I was weekend manageress …..then within 12 months I was a holiday cover manageress. It was a chain of 16 shops in bham and Warwickshire and for 7 weeks over the summer I worked full time covering different branches. Taxi used to arrive at approx 5.30ak every morning ….which was great fun if I’d need clubbing and not got home until 3am. Taught me so much, you are totally right. Mj Faulkner your first part time job really does set you up for the real world. As an employer, such experiences in my mind often trump straight a exam results!

Very true! I worked in retail whilst in 6 form and it taught me so much. It made me more talkative (I’m really shy). I wouldn’t be who I am today if I didn’t get that experience.

I worked many part-time jobs that helped shape me into the person I am now, from waitressing to retail to fast food, and I learned a variety of skills from each one! They've all helped me navigate the world of work and led me to where I am now in marketing (extrovert for the win!).
