Every May, scouts, friends, and community members convene at the veterans cemetery at Michigan Veteran Homes at Grand Rapids to place American flags upon the final resting place of more than 5,000 veterans. Veterans from every era of peace and conflict since the Mexican War of 1846-1848, through today, make these hallowed grounds their final resting place. We’re grateful for our friends at Mercantile Bank, who led the way in picking up and storing away those flags this year, ensuring they’re available for years to come to honor those no longer with us. The Anthem Veterans Memorial is located in Anthem, Arizona. This breathtaking monument is a place of reflection for military veterans, family, and friends to show their respect for those servicemen and women who bravely and fearlessly served our great country. • The five pillars represent the unity of the five branches of the United States military serving steadfastly together. • Staggered in size with their appropriate military seal placements on each pillar, the pillars are arranged in the Department of Defense order of precedence. • At precisely 11:11 a.m. each Veterans Day (Nov. 11), the sun's rays pass through the ellipses of the five Armed Services pillars to form a solar spotlight on the glass mosaic of The Great Seal of the United States. • The brick pavers within the Circle of Honor are inscribed with the names of U.S. servicemen and women, symbolizing the 'support' for the Armed Forces. The pavers are red, the pillars are white, and the sky is blue to represent America's flag. • The circle, flanked by two "Soldier Rows," represents an unbreakable border. Veterans with mobility issues through being wounded, injured, illness or age, deserve to be able to travel with dignity, not be manhandked on and off aircraft like a sack of potatoes, risking injury, or death. They deserve to know their wheelchairs will not be damaged during a flight or during loading and unloading. United Airlines had the opportunity to have its replacement fleet accessible but chose not do.
