Update on Arizona's wild horses! 🌟 Encouraging News: The recent lawsuit threatening the humane management of Salt River wild horses has been DISMISSED by the US District Court! The suit, filed by the Center for Biological Diversity (CBD) and trophy hunting groups, was filed with factual inaccuracies. The United States Forest Service (USFS) filed a motion to dismiss CBD's lawsuit, citing and exposing those inaccuracies. At the same time, AWHC and Salt River Wild Horse Management Group filed to intervene. The Court saw the inaccuracies and granted the USFS' motion, but gave CBD 30 days to amend its complaint. Well, those 30 days came and went, with no action from the coalition of trophy hunters and CBD. So the case is DISMISSED in the lower courts! ⚠️ Concerning Update: In Apache Sitgreaves Forest, just 150 miles away, the USFS shipped 45 captured Alpine wild horses to a slaughter auction in Texas. Salt River Wild Horse Management Group and allies stepped in, finding placements for all 45 horses. However, the USFS persists in rounding up wild horses, putting more at risk unless policies change. 🔗 What can you do? A for profit, Wildcat's Sanctuary and Ranch, pet sitting, dog walking, and house sitting. A 501c3 non profit, Animal Rescue and Veteran Support Services, Corp. DBA Veteran Rescue, helping veterans and animals in need mostly. I also help small children and their families that are homeless. Being homeless myself for five years while working has given me an insight into their plight. I also help neighbors, contractors, and more. I recently rescued two small, newborn kittens from a vacant house attic. They are three weeks old, bottle fed every two hours, and teething right now. My future goals are to purchase a horse ranch with home on it, build brick and mortar shelter for animals, cabins for the veteran clients and become one hundred percent operational. Right now, I work from my cargo trailer. I am doing much better than I was five years ago when we lost everything. I will not lie, it has been a struggle to eat, work, college and keep my health. I am six classes away from completing my Master's degree in Public Administration. The response to this was positive and endearing. The White Mountain wild horses live on nearly 400,000 acres of public and private lands and yet the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) allows for an Appropriate Management Level (AML) of just 205-300 wild horses. This population level was set in 1997 and has not been changed since. The BLM authorizes extensive summer and winter cattle and sheep grazing in the HMA and its surroundings.  Now, the agency plans to remove 586 White Mountain horses, bringing the population down to the low AML of 205 horses, leaving behind just one horse per 1,917 acres in the HMA!  What's worse, the BLM is basing the removal number on a 2022 census, conducted before the extremely harsh winter of 2023 caused heavy mortality for wildlife, including wild horses, across Wyoming. Instead, the BLM is claiming that while the winter severely affected other wildlife species, it did not result in significant mortality in the White Mountain herd.
