This book offers a theoretical, conceptual, and practical contribution to environmental justice and conflict resolution, exploring their connections to natural resource governance within the African context. Some of the discoveries in this book compelled me to reimagine the discipline of peace and conflict studies. This sets the context for my forthcoming article on Artificial Intelligence and the future of environmental conflict in the Global South. This article ties directly to my course, Engineering Peace, designed to help both engineering and non-engineering students utilize theories and principles from civil and environmental engineering, computer engineering, and mechanical and materials engineering to solve conflicts and build peaceful and just societies.

Personnel from the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez Dept. of Engineering Sciences & Materials have been setting up a room to become a student hub in Stéfani Bldg., S-310. Some computers and desks have already been set up as we look for more. Perhaps, a reader of this piece from a generous industry could contribute... I must underscore two things: First, all this work has been done WITHOUT any support from our administrators (at the College of Engineering level and -let alone- at the chancellor's level). Even worse, this is done despite their intent to dismantle our department. Second, this space will be for the students. We still do not have a schedule or personnel to staff the place. We will likely never have them because of the said lack of support (or continuous intent to pull us apart). Let everyone know.

If attending the EMI/PMC 2024 consider attending the following sessions: The Objective Resilience Committee will take place today at 3:00 PM CST. We have scheduled a suite of very interesting discussions such as the role of AI in objective resilience modeling and examples of using NHERI SimCenter for regional resilience assessment. I have co-organized two sessions with Abdollah Shafieezadeh and Paolo Bocchini on “Objective resilience: multi scale resilience measures for electric power networks in climatic hazards” that will be held tomorrow morning, May 29. Pooria Mazaheri from my team will present:Risk assessment and reliability modeling of transmission line systems under severe weather conditions. Muneer Qudaisat, MSc.Eng from my team will present: Multi-dimensional reliability assessment and resilience assessment of electric power networks. Plan to attend the 6th Objective Resilience Committee Student Competition tomorrow, May 29. This was an extremely well-received competition with 15 excellent submissions that resulted in four finalists competing for the final prizes. Finally, I have co-organized three sessions with Paolo Gardoni on “Objective resilience: computational advancements for performance-based engineering and resilience assessment of communities” to be held on Thursday May 30. On Wednesday, April 17th I again presented to/ taught an hour-long class on "Introduction to Railroad Engineering" to Prof. Kristen Sanford's C.E. 341 - Introduction to Transportation Systems at my alma mater, Lafayette College (Easton, PA). It was challenging to prepare for - 75 slides, (almost all original), including some unique/ never-before-seen depictions of several aspects - Cooper's railroad loading for structures, the layers of the track structure and the magnitudes of typical loads on them, the effect of variable loading patterns from the ties on the subgrade - both gaps and overlaps (superposition), and the land area potentially needing to be kept clear for adequate sight distance at unsignaled grade crossings. It also included simplified (for a 1-hour class) graphs of hypothetical maximum train tonnage on various grade for a given tractive effort, hypothetical train speeds up various grades for a given HP/ton ratio, and maximum speeds on several degrees of curvature for various superelevations based on 3" underbalance, and 1 for 6" underbalance for a tilting high-speed train. Lots of fun, and looking forward to doing it again next year! 6
