Bridges and overpasses are marvels of engineering. Yet, with time, fatigue issues in these structures can pose risks not just to the structure itself, but to the countless vehicles and pedestrians that rely on them every day. What goes into the assessment and remediation of such intricate structures, especially ones as crucial as the Gade Valley Viaduct? I love this paper from Nick and Esther Norton and the concept of the new-model engineer. Although it is focussed on the education of engineering students I think there is a lot we can all learn from the thinking. I would challenge everyone to consider what skills and mindsets they need to break out of their bounded rationality or at least explore how it restricts your thinking. Isamar, now a civil engineer with the Federal Highway Administration, has followed in her footsteps, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to the table. Their journey from college pals to influential leaders underscores the millennial takeover in civil engineering. As Elizabeth and Isamar put it, it's not just about filling roles but celebrating achievements and investing in leadership development. Which makes a current civil engineering student like myself excited for the future. But what truly sets Elizabeth and Isamar apart is their commitment to paving the way for young members to make an impact. They're not just sitting at the table; they're actively advocating for the inclusion of younger voices in decision-making processes. I'm thrilled to share my completion of the Road Design project during my third semester of the Associate Degree in Civil Engineering. This project involved using the 12d modeling program to design a rural road, including detailing an intersection, cul-de-sac, road widening, superelevation, and services pipeline. I also calculated earthworks volumes and adjusted the model to achieve an earthworks balance. Working on this project was a highlight of my academic journey, and I'm eager to gain more experience with 12d and apply it in the industry. #CivilEngineering #RoadDesign #12dModeling

With the heavy rain in College Station last week, many students were asking; “why are there so many puddles on the roads and parking lots when it rains?” The answer lies in our drainage systems. Most weren’t designed recently and we’re getting more rain now nation-wide than we have in the past 25 years! Pavement settles and warps over time and systems get outdated. You may be wondering "why don't we just update them?" Well, the answer is centered around the business idea of value creation. Let’s look at public infrastructure. The department of transportation in any state is working on a fixed budget and must decide which projects to pursue. What’s better, shutting down a mile-long stretch of a busy FM road so that it doesn’t have puddles when it rains, or adding an overpass to a congested intersection? Which will generate more value? These are decisions that get made every day. Similar questions get asked in the private sector, too! Driving through rain puddles on an overcast school day provides the grounds to illustrate just how the civil engineering and construction industries are affected by business concepts!

Did you know Texas has the second-most bridges in the United States after California? 30% of which do not have sufficient height, width or capacity to handle the increasing volume and type of traffic using them.
