Meet some of our summer interns this year! This is what Sofie Saga Fabian Anton Anton Oskar and Petter think so far: "Freedom and flexibility to plan one's work is very nice. Our supervisors are good at ensuring enough assignments for the summer so it should not get boring at work. Also, you feel no pressure, there is an understanding that you are new and can't know everything." "It feels like you will get to learn a lot. It's nice to see how the things you study actually work in real life." This summer we offer different assignments and projects in customer project teams, development teams, and in our workshop. The tasks vary from creating models, automatize, using C++ to hands-on work with cars. One of our summer interns will also continue working at NIRA during the autumn as a test driver which we are very happy about. What a way to begin the new year! Two weeks ago, we kicked off the 2024 strategic planning for Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s The Michigander Scholars program at Michigan Central in Detroit. Thanks to Victoria Waters of University of Michigan’s Mcity, James Hill of Michigan Technological University, Garth Motschenbacher, SPHR of Michigan State University, Dale Pilger and Doug Bourassa of Kettering University, and Gozde Tutuncuoglu of Wayne State University for their insight, experience, and wisdom as we embark on year 2 of the program. Thanks also to my MEDC Talent Solutions team members for helping to ensure our program and projects have the biggest impact possible by connecting our partner organizations and resources to the program: Crystal Ackerman, Joseph Kaczmarek, MBA, Chelsey Averill, and, taking the photo, Beth Swanson. The Michigander Scholars program is one of the MEDC Talent Solutions’ initiatives to help build the tech talent pipeline for Michigan’s key focus industries and employers. 🌿 Reflecting on a Fulfilling Summer 🌞🔬 Hello everyone! I hope you're having an awesome summer. I just had to share the incredible experience I had interning at the DCo's Triangle Wastewater Treatment Plant, thanks to the Durham County Government's LEEP Program. During my time here, I had the chance to work with different departments and let me tell you, it was a journey of surprises and growth. We thought I'd find myself working with the finance and administrative department? Certainly not me! Yet, this unexpected exposure taught me valuable skills that I'm eager to apply not only to my school's  Future Business Leaders of America, Inc. (FBLA)  chapter but also to my future entrepreneurial ventures. Working with the plant operators and lab analysts, getting hands-on experience was an absolute blast. I've always had a thing for the medical field, technology, and nature. This experience showed me how we can bridge the gap between health and the environment, through Environmental Engineering. Another thing that really stood out to me was the Nitrification and Denitrification🌀 process of the plant's water purification process. The idea of breaking down chemicals naturally without polluting the air was really shocking. The idea that we can tackle climate change issues by mimicking natural processes is so cool. This internship has restored my faith in humanity's capacity to tackle environmental challenges head-on. But it wasn't all about work—this summer gave me so much more. From creating connections with like-minded peers to rubbing shoulders with intellectual minds at DCo. I've come out of this experience with a network and a mindset that'll serve me well in my journey. A heartfelt thank you to DCo for granting me this opportunity. This isn't just a line on my resume; it's a chapter in my story that's left an indelible mark. #Experience Rosabeth Kanter's quote, "Everything looks like failure in the middle," resonates deeply with me. Experience serves as a pivotal bridge on the journey toward wisdom. During my undergraduate studies, I learnt about the necessity of drying compressed air (acquiring knowledge), yet I struggled to comprehend its significance. Why, I wondered, was drying air crucial? However, it was when I got into the industry for a graduate internship and encountered firsthand the detrimental effects of moist air on valve banks and pneumatic cylinders etc. that true understanding dawned upon me. Through this experience, the theoretical knowledge I had gained was illuminated, allowing me to grasp the importance and practical implications of drying compressed air. Experience is Golden.
