Why Users May Delete Your App Right After Download Today, I'd like to discuss common mistakes that often lead users to abandon apps right at the beginning of their user journey. Ineffective Onboarding It's crucial to provide users with step-by-step instructions when they first open the app after downloading. These instructions should automatically appear on the screen, eliminating the need for users to search for them. Poor onboarding often results in immediate disengagement with the app. Here are two onboarding mistakes that often lead to engagement issues: ➡The training doesn't initiate automatically upon the first launch; users have to hunt for it. ➡The instructions lack sufficient detail to effectively guide users through navigating and utilizing the application. When users can't find functions or understand how to use them, they tend to quickly abandon the app. To boost engagement, develop a meaningful step-by-step guide that clearly demonstrates how your product works, highlights key functions, and indicates where users can seek help when needed. Useless Demo Developers frequently create free versions to attract less-interested users to the app and eventually convert them into paying customers using a freemium model. However, achieving the right BALANCE is crucial. Offering too much in the free version may deter users from upgrading, while providing too little value may fail to convince users to make purchases. For example, if you have a mobile activity tracker, simply offering entertaining health facts in the free version may not be compelling enough. Instead, allowing users to manually input bedtime could be a great starting point. You can then entice users to upgrade to track sleep using devices like the Apple Watch and receive personalized sleep improvement recommendations. Technical Problems and Bugs Even with a stable product, continuous monitoring is essential, especially when activity drops suddenly. Technical issues often arise post-updates or with the introduction of new features. Regularly check user reviews for bug reports. Thoroughly test both the iOS and Android versions after major platform updates or product enhancements. Overwhelming users with demands upfront For instance, some apps require users to register with detailed information before accessing the main menu, which can deter users, especially in free versions. Instead, consider implementing social media login options or allowing users to browse as guests without creating an account. Then, highlight the benefits of registration during onboarding, such as access to saved data. Tooooo muuuchhh Aaaaaddss If ads disrupt the user experience, users are likely to switch to competitors' apps. Ensure ads are strategically placed and timed to avoid interfering with crucial app functions. Maintain a balanced ratio between content, functionality, and advertisements. Pay attention to user feedback regarding excessive advertising!

But I wonder, "Would I develop an app just for the sake of it being trending?" This was why we made our message clear for Glovida-RX from the start - our pharmacists are easily accessible via WhatsApp for any healthcare queries. If I were a patient or caregiver, I would prefer to use a low touchpoint like WhatsApp if I had questions to ask my pharmacist, as opposed to having another app. And this article illustrates these points clearly. While pointing to your app may feel like a concrete accomplishment to tout at the board meeting, the reality is that not all brands need an app. According to Google Trends, the first post-iPhone surge of “app fatigue” searches occurred in May 2009 — just one year after the launch of Apple’s App Store in 2008 (and just two years after the iPhone’s initial release). In 2016, TechCrunch made a definitive call: We, as smartphone users, have app fatigue. Think about it from the customer’s perspective: Why would you want one more app clogging your phone and using your memory? Worse, if your customers only interact with your brand occasionally, do you want to create an experience that will likely involve forgetting and resetting passwords every time someone tries to log on? As an app user myself, nothing irritates me more. So, what’s the alternative to developing an app in a world where customers want to be able to deal with most things from their mobile device? Mobile-first development backed by robust, human-powered phone and text support. This strategy offers several benefits: 1. You save money on development. By focusing on developing just one access point — the mobile website — you use fewer development resources. 2. You don’t have to worry about download numbers. Inevitably, creating an app creates a new hurdle brands are expected to clear: customer downloads. When downloads are low, nobody looks good. 3. You can funnel more resources to human support. I’ve written before about how chatbots don’t work well for many industries. When you’re streamlining your development work, you free up funds to use in other departments. Specifically, you can hire more human customer support employees who can engage with users over the phone and via text. The takeaway: Unless your customers are interacting with your brand daily, they probably don’t need an app to do so. A mobile-friendly web experience will enable ease of use without putting unnecessary burdens on your customers. Don’t Make Tech For Tech’s Sake." We’re currently in the era of customer experience which can be more easily achieved via something like WhatsApp which are already used by customers daily!

I get it. Finally taking action on your "million-dollar" mobile app idea is super exciting. I've been there. However, this excitement can sometimes lead to getting ahead of yourself in the development journey before getting ANY user feedback. It's tempting to want all the flashy features, gadgets, and gismos in your app. That's the vision right? What this leads to is allocating most, if not all, of your budget to product, with nothing left for marketing to go and acquire your first users. After conversations with countless founders, one crucial step I often see skipped is creating the MVP... Here’s some key points on why starting with an MVP is a game-changer and how it ties into your marketing and user feedback strategy: 👉 Focus on Core Features: An MVP allows you to focus on the essential features that solve your users' primary problem. This streamlined approach not only speeds up development, but keeps your sights set on the key feature/benefit of your product. What's your primary value-add? (ex. a fitness app that helps you track your workouts) 👉 Early Market Entry: By getting your app out into the market quickly, you can start building your user base and brand presence. Early adopters can provide invaluable feedback that will guide your next steps. (ex. Your users want to be able to track their meals/macros on the app) 👉 User Feedback is Gold: Once your MVP is in the hands of real users, you’ll start receiving feedback. This direct input is crucial for understanding what works, what doesn’t, and what features users are craving. (ex. Your users want more features that track cardio workouts over weight-lifting) 👉 Data-Driven Decisions: Marketing your MVP provides insights into your target audience and their behavior. Analyzing this data helps you refine your marketing strategies and tailor your app’s features to meet user expectations. (ex.
