What do you think of when you read the words “creative industries”? According to the government you should be thinking about the contribution from film studios, orchestras, museums, galleries, and theatres. The inference is that creativity is confined to a narrow slice of industry. I for one feel cross when I hear this. Every industry that survives is creative, if it isn’t, the more creative competition puts it out of business. Britain probably reached its first peak of creativity during the Industrial Revolution but, we have moved on since then. Creativity is what has allowed us to progress as a race, as a species we are intensely creative, not always for our own benefit. Every day there is some improvement in something, made by a creative human being who probably doesn’t think they are doing anything special. It’s creativity in every area that allows us to survive, and we should be celebrating it in every area of our lives. Art and music are glorious and creative. But so is electricity.
