Read the NZ Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) report here: https://lnkd.in/gDReRx_3 Findings include: - Many central government reforms result in increased costs for ratepayers, which central government does not adequately address when making its decisions. - Central government underestimates what its reforms cost councils. - Councils face high sunk costs when policies change; like freshwater management, which has changed every three years. - Ratepayers are now subsidising supposed ‘cost-recovery’ services like liquor licensing because central government sets these fees, and they haven’t increased for a decade. - True costs are hidden because councils absorb them by reducing other service delivery.

Well polling day is finally here and I will be off shortly to help Liberal Democrats in our London target seats. Before I do, I thought I'd post this short analysis of last night's big, final YouGov MRP poll. If my PivotTables are not letting me down, the SECOND places may be as interesting as the first places this evening. Who is the runner-up in each seat will play a big part in determining the battleground(s) of the NEXT general election. For Labour there will be three substantial fronts - against the Conservatives (whatever has become of them), against Reform and against the Greens. If YouGov's modelling proves right and Labour wins 435 seats tonight, the Conservatives will be the runner-up in 235 of these. Reform, however, is set to be runner-up in a shocking 103 seats. The Greens will be second to Labour in 34 seats. Lib Dems will be the challengers to Labour in 12 seats. I'll be interested to see how this projection of second places compares to the reality after votes are counted. If there really are more than 100 Reform second places to Labour, then Starmer's party will have an early strategic choice to make: do they expose and attack Reform now (from a position of political strength) or try to ignore them? Did you miss SPESA's annual State of the Union Address? Take a peek at some of SPESA Board Chairman Mark Hatton's predictions for the industry in 2024. ... At the beginning of this year, I would have agreed with most insiders predicting a 2024 outlook that was flat to 2023 — with more of the same for Q1-Q2 and some recovery in the back half of the year. I expected the year’s trajectory to look like an inverse curve to 2023. However, I now believe we may be heading toward recovery earlier than speculated. As I sit here now in mid-March, I am beginning to see green shoots of recovery across the market — most notably positive movement in Latin America — indicating a shift in a favorable direction. Let’s break it down into the obstacles and opportunities ahead of us. Headwinds: - Pressure on household incomes related to continued inflation, higher interest rates, and dwindling consumer savings. - Consumer confidence challenges related to financial, geopolitical, and a variety of other factors. - The ongoing consumer shift to experiential and travel related purchases (rather than goods). Further shifts in how consumers shop and where. - Climate and sustainability challenges, legislation, recycled availability, and related costs. - The election! Tailwinds: - Interest rates are falling and there is still pent up demand. - There are still a lot of housing needs. An increase in housing demand is expected in 2024. - Labor availability is improving and becoming more stable. - A return to the office (in some places) is driving new wardrobe purchases.  - Anticipated increases in the tailored goods space. We are actually seeing the return of the suit. - Nearshoring is real and is happening. Anti-China sentiment, cost of capital, inventory, and sales volatility equate to no long term view for supply chains and a desire to turn goods faster. This strategy brings higher costs but also better agility.  - There are projections for lower gas prices in 2024. - With the exception of current events in the Suez Canal, there remains a positive outlook for improved logistics and material availability. When looking at all the factors, I am happy to note that the tailwinds seem to win out. And, while the headline for 2024 is “uncertainty,” it appears as if there is some certainty that we have seen the worst for the sewn products business in North America and that we will see improvement this year. ...
