Working toward an anti-racist culture of medicine in Minnesota requires more inclusive narratives. This means centering the perspectives of those most impacted by racism in medicine and providing a platform for them to share their stories. For the speaker, it necessitates vulnerability and risk. For the audience, it requires listening to uncomfortable truths. In a series of interviews, local physicians share their stories and truths about practicing medicine as a person from a marginalized or minoritized community in Minnesota. Thank you, Dr. Oragwu, for spending time with us to reflect on your experiences. #RacialJustice #RacismInMedicine #SpeakYourTruth

A little #socialscience humor. But more seriously, Is it time to dust off or revisit #Maslow and his #hierarchyofneeds in terms of how we treat people with #compassion and #empathy when they are ill? We can go all the way back to the #Hippocraticoath. First, do no harm. More on this important topic in upcoming posts as it relates to my recent #livedexperience as a patient of our healthcare system. In the meantime, here are some criticisms of Maslow’s theory: https://lnkd.in/gj4SZBeZ #primumnonnocere #firstpersonpatient #weareallpatients #socialandbehavioralscience

For 1st/2nd Gens, what actions and/or inactions around accessing medical care (or any care) that COULD be perceived as resistance, non-compliance or apathy may actually be rooted in lack of support, lack of access (e.g. cultural, language barriers), fear, intergenerational trauma, limited information around certain options, etc. It's so important to look BEYOND our skin (name of the conference) and BEYOND the surface, the immediate actions to help improve 1st and 2nd generation's access to care. When I get to speak in front of professionals about how Intergenerational Trauma and being in The Repay Cycle™, can show up in different ways for 1st/2nd Gens it makes me excited. I am excited to see what we can do to create impact on large and small scales. It was such a great experience discussing ways to strengthen how we can take care of 1st/2nd gens through different lens, and to connect with such great folks with a desire to help others. Thank you @minorityhealthconference for letting me share this amazing space and for such great discussion. Just finished this read. For the mainstream audience it not only tells the story and experiences of Dr. Uche Blackstock but introduces the audience to the historical racist events that influenced how our health system operates today. For those of us studying and practicing in the field, it provides validation of our experiences trying to navigate the racism present in the academic world, while protecting our students/patients and trying to reduce health disparities in our communities. Many of us have to reckon with this reality and make tough decisions to continue, give up or take a different path. Regardless, the solutions should not be on us to shoulder alone. Leaders and allies in academic medicine and health, please be a part of the solution!

Hi Everyone. I just made a video on "Are we losing our holistic identity due to an overemphasis on reductionist evidence based (condition/symptom focused) research and practice. Its long but I feel it is a very needed discussion to inform practitioners about what is (often unconsciously) missing from our education and practice and how to put it back in (it should be a very interesting watch-listen though). https://lnkd.in/gQ68dkuk
