Technology, competition, and changing consumer demand have altered the admissions landscape. Yet the profession remains largely as it did in the 1970s, except now we send out emails that don’t get a response instead of postcards and viewbooks that don’t get a response. There’s a fundamental misalignment, with admissions counselors wasting time where it’s least valuable and ignoring what only human interactions can produce: CONNECTION. In this post, I’ll outline a few simple, cost-effective solutions to update admissions and generate stronger results! See my recent post on marketing to traditional age undergraduates: https://lnkd.in/eZXHJaTh First, though, here’s some information about the role of the admissions counselor: 👉🏻 The average college admissions counselor salary in 2024 is $46,645. 👉🏻 Duties include unglamorous travel to college fairs and high schools, reviewing applications, advising prospects, hosting campus tours, and maintaining endless communications in a high-stakes field with low pay and low morale. I found a terrific article in Inside Higher Ed that offers two quotes that really stick out: 👉🏻 The repetitive grind - demanding travel seasons, along with the need to make hundreds of seemingly random calls, often to be met with hang-ups and lack of interest - can be soul-crushing for even the most passionate counselors. 👉🏻 Rather than fixating on the quantity of calls, we shifted our perspective to prioritize the relational quality of interactions. I’ve built my career on deploying technology to improve efficiency, but somehow more tech has just added burdens to already-busy admissions counselor days without any legitimate payoff. More doesn’t mean better in this case. Counselors spend too much time trying to schedule interactions with prospective students–leaving voicemails that go unreturned and emails that go unopened (or to spam)--when technology can handle most of this work. I’d also argue that college fairs and high school visits should go the way of avocado-green appliances; that is not how today’s digital natives want to connect, and it wastes time and money with very limited ROI. But I understand this is a fundamental shift that will take time. In the end, admissions offices need a realignment; as the IHE piece notes, the number of calls is irrelevant; it’s the quality of the personal connections that counts. Here are the top three recommendations to fix the misalignment issue: 👉🏻 Revise success metrics in the admissions office, favoring quality over quantity 👉🏻 Find and deploy the right technology, including LiveChat and P2P text campaigns. 👉🏻 Keep counselors engaged with prospects, not leaving voicemails and trying to schedule meetings.

Fine Arts Consultant with expertise in Enrollment Management, and Independent Educational Consultant--Music Admissions Specialist
It's hiring season for admissions offices across the nation. ✅ I think I've seen at least 10 job postings in the last day about open admissions positions, and a few of my enrollment management colleagues talking about how they're onboarding multiple new admissions counselors over the summer. Between welcoming a new class to their university, setting enrollment targets for the next recruitment cycle, planning fall travel, and taking their own vacations, when do enrollment managers and admissions teams have time to train a whole new cohort of admissions counselors? 🔥 Finding ways to build capacity will be a game changer. 🔥 I was told multiple times during my first year as an admissions counselor to "trust the process--it takes a whole year to really understand the admissions cycle!", which meant a lot of extra work and time for my colleagues who were tasked with training me, and quite a bit of time for my Director and VP to coordinate the training. Wouldn't it be nice to have your team feeling extra confident, know how to use Slate effectively, know what to expect during the different "seasons" of the cycle, and how to support each other during what's going to be another tough recruiting year? I've developed a multi-week training curriculum that covers the admissions cycle overview, the basics of using Slate, best practices and trends in higher ed recruitment, how to communicate with colleagues, prospective students and parents, making the best use of travel season, and more. 💯 The idea is to give brand new admissions counselors a head start while creating capacity for the rest of your admissions team to take care of themselves (vacation, anyone?) before ramping up recruiting. Reach out if you need a helping hand this summer in your admissions office!

Sales Professional, Servant Leader, Campus Director, DOA, Data Driven, Admissions Expert, System Driven, Customer Experience Expert, Closer, Trainer.
Ageism in Admissions: The Struggle of Seasoned Professionals I have been applying to be an admissions rep and with all my experience get turned down daily. In the competitive world of college admissions, experience is highly valued. Seasoned professionals who have spent years climbing the ranks to become campus directors, directors of admissions, and experienced leaders bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table. Their insights and skills are often invaluable in shaping the future of educational institutions and guiding students towards success. However, despite their impressive resumes and years of experience, these professionals sometimes find themselves facing a surprising hurdle when seeking new opportunities: ageism. Ageism, the discrimination or prejudice against individuals based on their age, is a pervasive issue in many industries, including education. Even in a field where wisdom and experience are typically revered, seasoned admissions professionals may encounter challenges when applying for positions typically held by younger candidates, such as regular admission representative roles. Imagine the scenario: a highly qualified and experienced campus director decides to apply for a regular admission representative position at a different institution. During the interview process, they are met with a question that catches them off guard: "Why would you want to step back to this role?" This question, often asked with underlying assumptions about age and ambition, reflects the ageist attitudes that can permeate the hiring process. For many seasoned professionals, the decision to apply for a role that may seem like a step down in terms of title or responsibility is not about stepping back, but rather about seeking new challenges, growth opportunities, or a change of pace. These individuals bring a unique perspective and a wealth of experience that can greatly benefit the team and the institution as a whole. However, their motivations and aspirations are sometimes overshadowed by ageist assumptions that equate age with a lack of ambition or a desire to coast on past achievements. Addressing ageism in admissions and other fields requires a shift in mindset and a commitment to valuing individuals based on their skills, experiences, and potential, rather than their age. Organizations can take proactive steps to combat ageism by promoting diversity and inclusion, implementing bias training for hiring managers, and creating a culture that values the contributions of professionals at all stages of their careers. For seasoned admissions professionals facing ageism in their job search, like me, it can be disheartening to encounter such prejudices after years of hard work and dedication to their field. However, it is important for these us to stay resilient, confident in their abilities, and determined to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions about age and professional abilities.
