Ms. Leila Benali, PhD., Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, took part today in Rotterdam in "Country Spotlight: Morocco" session, as part of The Africa Hydrogen Forum, alongside Mr. Tarik Hamane, Acting CEO of Masen. In her speech, the Minister highlighted Morocco's commitment, under the wise leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, to achieve and accelerate the energy transition in the Kingdom and the world as a deliberate political choice for more than 15 years. Ms. Benali highlighted the specificity of the Moroccan experience in terms of accelerating energy transition projects and developing Morocco's offer in the field of green hydrogen, noting that Africa and Europe are called upon in the next 18 months to put in place some basic building blocks to accelerate the development of cheaper and more competitive green hydrogen, most notably: - Support Africa to leverage its tremendous opportunities; - Focus efforts on the mechanisms that enabled liquefied natural gas and nuclear power to flourish in the last century; - Promote open trade, cross border incentives and subsidies, along the supply chain to lower costs and foster technology development. The Enegy system of Ethiopia: needs for a comprehensive Energy system planning tool and model for a realistic plan and development. ===========//============ In Ethiopia, while electricity reaches less than half of the population, great progress has been made over the past two decades. The National Electrification Program, launched in 2017, outlines a very optimist and unrealistic plan to reach universal access by 2025, through unachievable plan even from the bird view of the plan aiming to supply 35% of the population with off-grid solutions without clear strategies and action plans. Meanwhile, Ethiopia is struggling with many socio economical, political, and environmental challeges such as ethenic conflicts and war due to political instability and lack of governace to name the least is trying in diversifying its hydro-dominated installed generation mix in favour of solar, wind and geothermal and interestingly also with an alternative clean nuclear power plant technologies too. Boom! The country is however struggling to strive and thrive by building a more climate-resilient power system and reach its sustainable development objectives. We remain reslient! Ethiopia Tikdeme

Russia’s deepening energy cooperation with Congo isn’t just about oil pipelines or nuclear deals, but it’s a calculated geopolitical strategy. As Europe and the U.S. turn towards renewables, Russia is doubling down on Africa, using its energy dominance to build influence. The energy transition is progressing at different speeds across regions, reflecting varying economic and geopolitical priorities. For Congo, these partnerships are crucial for resolving fuel shortages and improving infrastructure, but they also come with strings attached. Geographically, Africa has always been a victimized battleground for external powers seeking to control resources and trade routes, and Russia is reasserting itself in this space. Congo’s vast energy reserves are part of a larger strategic conundrum where access to critical natural resources dictates power on the global stage. Thinking aloud, the broader question to me is whether this influx of Russian investment will reshape Congo’s long-term energy autonomy or entangle it in Moscow’s geopolitical chess game across Africa. Past experiences suggest better immediate short-term results than long-term sustainability for the countries involved. Congo’s move to deepen energy cooperation with Russia highlights a strategic effort to modernize its underdeveloped energy infrastructure. With oil production of 200,000 barrels per day, the country struggles with insufficient refining capacity, resulting in fuel shortages that have recently affected its major cities. Russian energy giants, including LUKOIL and ROSATOM, have already initiated significant investments in Congo’s oil, gas, and nuclear sectors, with the potential to unlock further development. The involvement of ZNGS Prometey in building a critical oil pipeline between Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville is set to ease these shortages by improving the transportation of refined products across the country. For Russia, this cooperation serves as an extension of its geopolitical ambitions in Africa. With its expertise in energy and infrastructure, Russia is using investments in hydrocarbons and nuclear energy to cement influence in African countries like Congo. As the West focuses on renewable energy and sanctions on Russian exports, Moscow is seizing opportunities in nations that require support in traditional energy sectors. This partnership not only enhances Congo’s energy resilience but also provides Russia with another stronghold in the African continent’s resource-rich landscape. Congo’s growing reliance on Russian energy investments underscores a shift in global energy alliances, as Moscow continues to capitalize on gaps left by Western retreat. Speaking at the #BalkanEnergyForum last Friday (24/5) which was successfully organised in Greece’s northern energy centre in Kozani, Macedonia (https://lnkd.in/dhWrYguc), the chairman of the Institute Costis Stambolis had the opportunity to address some of the pressing #energyissues affecting the region. Which are none other than the significant energy import dependence and the still high use of coal and lignite. "#Decarbonising SE Europe remains an important challenge as inspite of significant investments in renewables over the last 10 years or so and billions of euros spend on #cleanenergysources, the region’s reliance on solid fuels remains high”, noted Stambolis. In his short presentation (https://lnkd.in/dEefECjb) he highlighted these issues and provided some useful background data. In his intervention the Chairman of IENE also stressed the need to employ a cascade of #cleantechnologies such as #nuclearpower ( Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Croatia/ Slovenia and soon Turkey are already using nuclear) #geothermalenergy and #naturalgas. Especially #LNG since it emits a lot less GHGE’s compared to other fuels. In addition the #SEE and the #EastMed region has discovered considerable n.gas deposits and could over the years exploit them to the advantage of local economies but also to supply the rest of Europe. “After all reducing GHGE’s in the long term is a complex task and necessitates the use of all different energy sources and technologies”, Costis Stambolis concluded in his short presentation. Other panelists in the first session of the conference in which the chairman of IENE participated included the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Costas Fragoyiannis, Ms. Alexandra Sdoukou, Deputy Minister for Energy and Ms. #MariaSpiraki, a Euro MP. The panel was expertly moderated by Mr. #DimitrisDiamantidis, a well respected journalist from Thessaloniki.

Two and a half years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, the European Union has thus far proven resilient in the face of the strategic vulnerability posed by reliance on Russian energy supplies. Through curtailment of demand, deployment of renewables, revisiting of nuclear policy, and deepening gas and LNG partnerships with Norway and the United States respectively, the EU has been able to resist Russian efforts to undermine support for Ukraine through the weaponization of energy exports. It remains to be seen what long-term effect the renewed push for European energy security will have on the green transition and the integration of continental energy markets. To learn more about the geopolitics of European energy, check out this brilliantly thorough report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). I will continue to advocate that Canadian energy conversion technologies become part of a national security policy framework. The choice faced by Canadians during this time of economic and social wellbeing decline must become better defined. More Canadians must be made to understand that: 1. Energy infrastructure investment dollars retained within our economy has the highest multiplier effects when directed towards Canadian supply chains. 2. Investments in wind & solar PV supply chains result in over 80% of said dollars flowing out of our economy and to our greatest geopolitical adversary. 3. Every Canadian dollar invested in Canadian CANDU nuclear power results in over $1.40 being generated directly & indirectly within our national economy (https://lnkd.in/gNi-RitC). Former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien and former Ontario Premier Mike Harris are just some of our national leaders who are arguing for CANDU technology investment (https://lnkd.in/gAce886s). The Conference Board of Canada has recently predicted that for every $1 billion CANDU MONARK reactor built in Canada, the national economic multiplier effect over the lifetime of said infrastructure will be as high as $12 billion (https://lnkd.in/gvm2jukB).
