The human mind coupled with our ocular perception are truly a remarkable pair. But there are times they can't be fully trusted and that is where machine vision comes into play. The image below contains no red but your brain adds it because it knows Coca-Cola is red. Zoom in if you don't believe me. As beautiful and great our minds are, they make up data to fit the situation at hand and fill in gaps. Sometimes this is good but other times; not so much. As we begin to couple modern camera sensor technology with AI image inspection techniques more and more, this is one of the big things that excites me about the industry I've joined again. Within a few milliseconds you can have the "truth", you just have to decide what your truth is! Exact pixel values, pattern analysis, or a comparison to a multi-million image dataset (acquired over your entire life) of what a Coca-Cola label is supposed to look like. Best of all, with a typical computer of today, you can have all of these concurrently and have the system decide what is best based on all of the different modes of analysis. Even though we have come a long way with vision and AI technology, we are just scratching the surface of what is possible...
